Ferries and Rear extensions

Been reading that some people have managed to get cheaper ferry prices by declaring the vehicle to be X.Xm, not including a cycle rack, and then ticking the box to say that they have the cycle rack fitted - and thus getting the vehicle in on a lower rate.

I've just fitted a Rhine Safe Step to the Ducato, so instead of being 5.99m it's now about 6.3m including the safe-step.

Has anyone else fitted a similar rear-protrusion and if so, how did you get on with ferry operators?

Also - I might fit a Fiamma rear-door mounted bike-rack in the future, which will probably extend beyond the safe-step's dimensions anyway, any thoughts on what difference that might make?

thanks!

I have put two lengths (6 and 7M ) in when booking but never seen it makes any difference for me so just book correct length.

Noticed on some ferries you have to select up to 7 metres or up to 10 metres, our van is 7.4 & we also have a bike rack. If I did book at 10 metres I'm sure they would still put a another vehicle uncomfortably close. Tend to use Euro tunnel where size doesn't matter to them we are a campervan
