The amount of people on here that has trouble with there three wayfridge in one form or an other .I am only pleased I fitted a compressor fridge over ten years ago and had no bother with it .even when it's been over 30 degrees in the van it's still hold 3 degrees in fridge and -15 to 18 in freezer.

I’ve fitted usb fans to both of my 12v fridges. Even so, the freezer still struggles .
Fitting multiple fans to a 3way has been done by many. So that makes your idea, a goodun.
Great minds think alike.. 😬

Same here ....3 ways are outdated tech (and not very good outdated tech at that )
One of the best things I did was junking the damn thing (well selling it on ebay and getting a ridiculous price for it ;-)

My three way is on its way out. Thanks Jeff. Pretty sure I’ve enough batteries to cope. Along with enough solar. Sun is a bit of a problem 🫣
Got to admit, still a bit nervous. The extra storage space will be handy.

Even a domestic fridge running off an inverter I think is a better deal than a 3 way fridge as David can vouch for.
Something that a "proper" Motorhome Fridge has going for it is it has door latches that can lock when you are on the move.

Other advantages of them are ........

Bear with me ....

Trying to think ....

Nah. You got me on the other advantages.

I fitted a PC fan to the fins on the self build, cable goes via the fridge drain just under the fins and is powered by the fridges 12v circuit via a thermo switch.

I faced it down as cold air falls I assisted it, you have to realise that you need to leave channels for the air to move around the whole fridge or it doesn't work, and of course after travelling make spaces again but it did work.

Going of what ihave seen the 3 way fridges and not fit for purpose when it gets hot which they should be seeing how much they cost .

Limitations of the absorbtion cycle ....
Unless you can increase airflow with fans to maximise airflow ...
Though even then in properly warm conditions it will struggle .

Compressor types are much more inherrantly thermally efficient .

What is the basic minimum to run a compressor fridge off grid of what ever type, and what is the best one to replace size for size a 3 way and the van still look right?

I'd say minimum to allow other useage would be 200ah and 200w of solar (we have 3 x 100ah agm batteries and 400w solar)

Our Batteries never get down below 90% in summer even with tv/lighting charging etc
And are back to 100% within 1 hour of sun up on a sunny day ...

Size wise ....one that fits the existing hole best ...
I wanted a grey door BUT had to compromise on black for one in a spot on size ...
Went for one without a freezer compartment for extra use able space (we never carry frozen stuff and have,a Waeco 40l cool box compressor that will run in freezer mode if needed .

We would need a freezer as Liz cooks for the van, and I do a few curries to take as well as well, GMG gave us a good one and Tim ZZR1400 did too :) :)

You know this is why I like forums, where would I have found that idea?

I've only got 400amps of lithium and 600watts of solar so I think I've got it covered lolol
