Fuel strikes

It has just been announced that from Monday 12 August the Portuguese fuel / tanker drivers will be starting a strike, this could be called off at the last minute but if not you will find it almost impossible to get fuel in some areas. Last time it happened a lot of people in Lisbon and other large places were unable to get any fuel at all. Usually slightly better outside city’s. Also be careful it is illegal to carry spare fuel in cans.If I hear it has been canceled I will put it on hear.

Thanks for the info. I’m in Portugal now but planning to start heading back next week.

Interestingly there were long lines of cars waiting for fuel today in Tomar and the strike dose not start until Monday. Just stocking up I suppose.

Typical Portuguese style, they don’t know when they’ve got it good !! They did it last year almost this time right in the middle of high season and caused chaos. Almost like they don’t want to move forward but remain third world..I Love the place always will but can’t understand their mentality sometimes!!

Just an update the local garages are now putting a restriction of 20 liters of diesel per customer and the queues are getting longer.

If this strike happens, we will stay longer in Spain, however, there are rumours of strike action there

Fuel rationing during truckers' strike

Portugal's government announced on Friday that during the truckers’ strike, refuelling for light vehicles will be rationed to a maximum of 25 litres and heavy vehicles 100 litres, available only at filling stations that do not belong to the Strategic Network of Filling Stations (SNFS).
In a press conference, the minister of environment and energy transition, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, explained that SNFS has two types of stations: one for priorities, such as the armed forces, medical emergency, transport of agricultural products and the other for the general public.

There are 321 priority stations in the SNFS network.

The strike, scheduled for 12 August for an indefinite period, threatens to bring the country to a stand-still, since it will affect all types of transport in all areas, not only the transport of dangerous goods. Supplies to supermarkets, industry and services will all be affected.

Have to wait and see how it pans out but two of local garages are now sold out and the strike doesn’t start until tomorrow.

We drove from Alvor to Albufeira via Armacao de Pera this morning and some garages are closed, but the ones that are open had long queues and some of them were out of diesel.

A cautionary tale regarding queueing for diesel fuel. Once you’ve joined the queue get someone to go and check asap that they actually have diesel. I queued for ages at an Intermarche today, only to discover when I was stuck in a line in the carpark that they only had petrol. The diesel sign was lit and there were no indications they had run out.

It was hell trying to get our 8.2meter motorhome out again and I had to negotiate narrow lanes bordered by shaded car parking spaces and unfortunately I didn’t escape unscathed following a particularly sharp turn. I think this will end up an expensive holiday.

On the bright side, I managed to get 25 litres of diesel at a different garage.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience today, hope the damage was not so bad. Very typical over here ,unfortunately most cannot think ahead of themselves leaving chaos unnecessarily in many cases. Just a sandwich board or something at entrance saying No Diesel!! would be enough, not rocket science.. Managed to get some today in Tavira at Pria but there were queues.

Been there, done that, need the tee shirt 🥴
I have today driven from Albufeira in Portugal with a full ish tank to well into Spain having been told about it a few days ago. Albufeira had none at the Repsol station except for taxis. One of the motorway services had fuel as I passed but at least one had nothing. I feel sorry for any caught out but I was lucky to be told by a guide in Lisbon so filled up straight away knowing I was off to Albufeira and topped up just before my destination three days ago so had enough to get as far as Granada before a refill of about 45 litres

Just an update for anyone traveling to Portugal The ongoing fuel strike is getting slightly worse with long queues at a lot of filling stations and at the moment it appears to be continuing, also be aware it is affecting border areas in Spain so don’t leave it until the last moment to fill up .
