Can anyone tell me what settings I should set on my coordinate's please on my Garmin camper satnav, Roaming Rog kindly set it up for me at the Hereford meet, but it only gives me the option to enter 5 digits after setting the degrees, when most coordinates give the degrees and then a six figures afterwards. Unfortunately it is not accurate as it does not allow me to add all the mins and seconds after the degrees and takes me to the wrong place because of not been able to add the last digit. Ihave attached a couple of photos to show my settings.

It is set up for decimal degrees, so you must enter the co-ords in that format. If the co-ords you have are not in decimal degrees, you need to change the settings in the bottom picture to match your co-ords.

Thanks but I cannot actually see that setting on my Garmin Sat Nav, there are a number of options to choose from, but the maximum I have found is it will only allow you to put 5 consecutive numbers in after you have entered the degree's, yet a lot of coordinate's have 6, I hoping that someone with the same sat nav can show me which setting option I should be using.

The degrees, minutes and seconds setting is the one you can just about see the top of in the second ( bottom ) photo.

It is 2 down from what it is set at now.

You only need five places of decimal to find a precise location on a SatNav.

When I first started using them I entered more digits and then started reducing them to find the ootimin number. Five digits is perfect.

It's quicker to enter too!

Enjoying seeing your journey as you travel!

EDIT:Just seen you're using DMS.... May I suggest you edit to Decimal Degrees as it's faster.

What are the co-ords you are trying to put in, can you post them here?

Oh that's brilliant news, I was trying to put it all in but it would only allow me to put 5 digits in, I will put it back to the settings Roaming Rog put it on in that case I was just baffled as to why I couldn't add 6 numbers after putting the degrees in.

This is the next place we are going too thanks. Mind you it might be like a mud bath with the amount of rain it put down last night it Spain in Huelva were we are at the moment.

Leave it on the decimal degrees setting and use the top ones in your pic for lat and long and miss off the last figure as HS said.

You can download the complete user manual from Garmin. Which will give you an insight in everything the device can do. Just go on their uk website and have a look.

If my maths is correct, going down to 5 decimal places of a degree will - in Spain - give you an location within 4 feet of the precise location - more than the GPS system in the Sat Nav can actually pinpoint. 6 points would take you to within 5 inches

Took me a while to get my head round entering coordinates on my Garmin, for the same reason... none of the quoted figures seemed to match. Once I realised you don't need the last digit, I used it almost exclusively round Europe last summer and it was always accurate. I did fall foul of the East/West thing once... wasn't paying attention!

Erm not correct Jennie, Lee sorted out Alan's and you copied it after Lee gave up trying to get it into our thick heads we were doing it wrong.

That happens to all of us when we (me) are rushing.

What I do to speed things up is to copy the E/W coords into memory and then paste it twice into my browser. That way it's simple to delete the bits you don't need, leaving the balance in the right order.

Hi Dave,
Hope the trip is going well.
This is probably a bit late in the day but you only need to enter Digital Co-ordinates into your Garmin.
In your post #9 above, the correct input would be;
North 3713380 No need to enter the decimal point and the 1 on the end of the original post is surplus to requirements, you only need five digits behind the decimal point. ( If the sixth digit is greater than 5, then its a good idea to increase the fifth digit by one, if it is less than 5 then leave the fifth digit as it is.
West 00648920 Again ignoring the decimal point, but because your OP only had four digits after the decimal point it is sensible to simply enter 0 to make it five digits.
Worth remembering, if you have Google Maps on your laptop, find the exact spot that you wish to travel to and Right Click.
You will get a box come up, with a variety of choices.
Click on 'Whats Here' and it will give you the Digital Co-ordinates to enter into your Garmin.
Hope this helps.
Best regards to you both, stay safe.
Rog.
