Gas rings, not enough burning power to cook with a Wok?

Hello one and all, I hope that someone can help me with the following problem.

My most beloved does all the cooking when we are out and away and when cooking most meals she uses a carbon steel wok.

The problem she experiences is that none of the burners of the Spinflo 4 burner gas hob I fitted in 'Millie' has enough burning power to really sear any of the meats she is cooking and likewise when using a griddle pan when cooking steaks. This is a right royal pain as she is a truly exceptional cook and it is quite noticeable that the belly swelling delights she prepares are never quite as good as when she is cooking at home!

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit a larger jet into one of these hobs that might hopefully result in a larger and more thermally efficient flame?

Many thanks

Maybe get a slightly smaller WOK and leave it get very hot B4 adding the meat and maybe cut the meat into smaller pieces !

Mmmmmmm, but it is already the smallest available wok we have ever found .............. she is also by the way a fully trained/qualified catering chef and food hygienist.

I have seen some seriously compact Woks - but I can't recall where :) (and it was suggested I didn't buy, so can't check the size).

I have a pan that I got from TK Maxx (they have a great variety there) that is not officially called a Wok but I find works great as a Stir-Fry utensil as it has nicely sloped sides. That was pretty compact as well and is very nice to use. I'll pop in a photo later when I go to the Camperbus (I bought it as a small 'Camping Wok' specifically)

Dave; the wok in question is only about 25cm across at the top and from our experience if you go for a smaller diameter top then the base is also proportionately smaller and it is already so small that it is quite an unsteady item when placed on the hob, so I would hate to go for a smaller version.

I think that what I will try to do is see if the actual burner and hence the jet as well can be increased in size because on the Spinflo hob fitted all the burners are exactly the same size!

You can buy some camping stoves (gas) which have seriously hot flames. The one in the photo is a Coleman Alpine and is very good. If you are going to any meets I could bring it along for you to try.

Years ago, we bought something that sits on top of the ring for a wok to sit on. Bought in a Chinese store and recommended for channelling the heat from the burner,

We had the same problem in our kitchen, gas was not strong enough to heat the wok for my favorite stir fry ,I removed the jet from the largest burner and reamed it out a very small amount result perfect stir fry. The reamer I used was one of my clock tools.

Any change to a jet size will result in the flame not burning with the correct air / gas ratio resulting in increased CO so my advise would be DON'T. Over sized pans for the burner can cause flame chilling and also increase Carbon Monoxide.

Over time, the burner jets get partly blocked, and cleaning the jets might restore their power.
You could indeed fit a bigger jet, but you would possibly need to increase the air to match: make sure that the flame is still burning blue, with no yellow.

For similar reasons to above we bought a single electric induction hob (£40 from a Tefal outlet) which works well when cooking inside. In the summer we have a cadac safari chef connected to an external bbq point on which you can use the burner with a wok or griddle on the plate provided.
