Grand Tour vs Top Gear

With time to waste the other night I selected Grand Tour on Amazon... Big mistake, what a load of rubbish! Buffoonery presentation and tired old ex-Top Gear features. I had hoped for something better but was disappointed.

I used to to love old TG and laughed at the silly stuff they did, until it got a bit repetitive and less motoring orientated and more slapstick. The end came too late for me as I had not bothered with the last series before JC got fired. The new TG I thought got off to a bumpy start, presenters seemed awkward and seemed to be trying to recapture the old TG style. Thankfully IMO they have now settled into a more entertaining style with plenty humour but more motoring content.

i think new TG could do with a bit more Fifth Gear influence but I think I will continue to watch the programme. GT however will not be given another chance by me.

I too liked TG and like the new one as you say now they have settled into it never watched GT as I thought it would be a desperate rehash of a great original program.
 
I actually enjoyed the first season of Grand Tour but thought episode 1 of 2 a bit dull. I got bored of the BBC offering pretty quickly after the shake up. I think they are taming it down a bit for season 2 of GT and that for me is a shame. The wackier the better.
 
I think that the original Top Gear was by far the best, before it was turned into a comedy programme.

 
It was more a specialised motoring program then though. A bit boring (For me). It all changed when they started doing daft things like driving 4x4s to the North Pole while drinking G&T's. It became an entertainment program that opened it up to a much wider audience across the globe. Budgets went through the roof and rightly so as it made a fortune. Even Mrs D would watch it then. Im not really interested in the tech specs of the latest BMW. I Dont care how cars work at all. I do like seeing caravans getting blown up or cars being made into boats with outboard motors on though. Maybe there just isnt a market for a sensible motoring show these days or wouldnt there be one? I Can understand the frustration of people who are interested in learning about cars and stuff though.

Exactly, there are loads of entertainment programmes but almost nothing like the original Top Gear. Just a shame that they stole the name for their comedy show.
I also partially blame the Top Gear comedians for the awful ride given by a lot of modern cars. Since cars have been compared by racing them at circuits by Top Gear and other motoring journalists their suspension has been made unnecessarily firm for everyday normal use in order to get favourable reviews from the racetrack.
It's good to see that at last these ridiculous programs are waning.
 
Liked most of the TG history but not the last few years of JC, thought it was just to off topic for me. Never watched GT as I don’t like JC, which is odd because I used to like him before he thought he was the show all by himself. But he’s maid lots of money and I’m sure that keeps him happy.

Yes I laughed at the daft stuff the first time they did it but it got a bit repetitive and predictable and less funny. I liked the Stig stuff and I even forgave them when they put a garden shed on a TVR ( the model I had at the time) and drove it to Blackpool, and I liked the Toyota Hilux Pickup that could not be killed, but as things got sillier I get bored and stopped watching. I enjoyed the last series of new TG but can see it could go the same way, pity.
of the recent TV motoring programs I think 5th Gear was the best even though some of the presentation was amateur and some a bit cringey, the content was better.

Sorry with going against the flow but I like the Grand Tour... Straight motor shows are boring, they trot out the latest 200mph super car which nobody can afford, scream round a track at speeds we can't do legally and nobody would do in such expensive cars,,

So buffoons doing stupid things even if it is the same stuff trotted out from the old Top Gear still sits fine with me..

If there is such a market for a sensible motoring program why isnt there one? Serious question as on every forum its discussed you get a similar response.
 
That's OK Ray and Barry, I don't think you are necessarily against the flow, I expressed my opinion which of course is only mine. I raised the topic as I was interested to see if it was just me that was disappointed with GT.

I can always watch old TG on Dave I suppose

each to their own and there cannot be a right or wrong answer to the question I asked.

I liked the old TG3 with the gruesome threesome, the later one with Evans was really crap, then when he went it improved immensely, The Grand tour is a different animal altogether, S1 was okay ish, but Clarksons voice, and speaking manner had changed, not liking that, S2 E1 was again okay, but May has gone all weird, lord knows what happened to Hammond but I think once fuss of them going to Amazon has died, people will start to think, hang on this is getting worse, anyway, the daft sods will probably kill themselves before long
 
I have to say that I really looked forward to the TG Specials (normally over Christmas), the shows were fun and I liked the buffoonery of those dedicated programs,. It was something all the family watched and enjoyed and looked forward to. I have only seen a few of the GT programs but not enough to form a strong opinion on their production content. I have also seen a few Top Gears with both new formats and found them a turn off. and that is what I have done.
I really enjoy reading Clarkson's books (don't always agree with him), his style is punchy, funny and irreverent and I think that is what drew me to TG when he was in it.
 
I agree with GB (above) ive read all his books. Really funny and I share a lot (not all) of his outlook on life and people. He does write a good rant.
 
There is one programme that tops all these, Celebrity Juice it's Marmite you love it or hate it, I love it..

Keith Lemon is so funny. I used to like Shooting Stars as well. They should bring that one back. The Day to Day and Brass Eye (Chris Morris) were really funny back in the 90s as well. Could do with a few more like them.
 
Funny how we all differ on what we like.
 
We'd all have 2002 Autocruise Wentworths if we didn't eh?
