My Good Lady had on knee replacement in 2010
We were full timing in the van, home for for the summer
Got chatting to a regular dog walker.
He recommended NHS Choose and Book service.
Saw a charming Specialist at the nearby Spire Hospital.
2 weeks later, she was walking about on crutches
He said that her other knee was nearly ready to fall.
He booked her in for the following August .
By late October she was hopping on and off Feluccas on a Nile cruise.
I wonder if that scheme is still available ?
We're anchored in Portugal , by a vicious dose of long Covid.
We get treatment at a nearby private hospital.
It's costly, but we've nothing much else to do with our cash.. Our combined state pensions, paid into a local bank, cover most of our outgoings.
nightclubs & dancing are a thing of the past

Donald had been told 65 week wait for consultation, I've been told 45 weeks. My cousin in Newcastle had her pre-med and within 3 weeks she had a hip replacement!

We’re in County Durham wife to doctors two weeks ago seen consultant and an X-ray today op within 6 weeks .

I guess it depends on where you are
Southampton can’t even put anyone on a list yet as consultants have not been appointed .
Seems one left some time ago hence has not answered any letters .

The consultant that left is now into backs.

I crossed the border in October 1999 and later developed arthritis in both hips. First replacement was in Feb 2010 [creaks now so due for renewal!] after some 6 months wait [needed to lose weight to minimise the risk from the anaesthetic]; second hipreplaced in 2011 after about 3 months wait. Brilliant service and care!

Not a hope in hell of me doing that lol I would have to be completely unconscious or they wouldn't get near me with a saw or knife lol

Didn't feel a thing but the noises were a little unsettling especially the Hammering .

Had my left one done 18 months ago. My Dr. had said beforehand it would be 18 months on a waiting list. So decided to pay. Went to Spire Hospital. Consultant said “don’t believe everything they tell you, it’s only the complicated ones that need an NHS hospital with a long wait, keep your money, I can put you on my NHS list and do it in 3 months when you come back from Europe”…and so he did, cost me nowt.

However NHS can make simple things complicated. I broke my arm in France, once plaster came off and got all clear I drove slowly home. The French hospital would have offered me 3 weeks physio, but time didn’t permit because of Brexit. Went to my own doctors today to arrange physio…
”Oh we can’t possibly do that without X-rays and report”.
“I have French hospital X-rays and report”…
”Oh we can’t accept those without a translation”.
“I can translate them for you, it’s only a paragraph”.
“Oh that would never do, it has to be a (very expensive) official medical translation, takes ages, we’ll have to refer you to NHS hospital for an X-ray.
Besides the French may have missed something (peers suspiciously at X-ray…can’t trust foreigners)”.

Wonderful, they should get the results just before we next go away in June, so with luck may see physio in August just before we go away again…grr!
So looks like it’s back to the internet physio again.

Don't worry about that,as well as the spinal block they give you something very nice. You are so high that although you can hear drilling and hammering sounds you won't give a toss. I was chatting to the anaesthetist all the way through about favourite walks in the Peak.
Much safer and quicker recovery than being knocked out.

I know it's easy to say, but don't worry. The op is so life changing and you are up on your feet next morning (hip). I've been told from the xrays that my other hip will need doing sometime,although no problems with it yet. When the time comes I will be eager to get it done. If you have the spinal block you can opt to be completely out as well. They just give you a heavy sedative so you won't know anything about it.Good luck with it.

I was awake for both my hip replacements, and the first op was conducted by a very posh English surgeon, who had an 'apprentice' with him and who was asking all sorts of technical questions, including which size hammer and which size socket! But the English surgeon started proceedings with, 'Right, we have a very well built, quite young patient today. So what are we betting for the blood loss? I'll put my £10 on 650ml ...' Everything was conducted in a light-hearted, but incredibly skilled and professional fashion, whilst the anaesthetist spent the time telling about his Mercedes M/Home and his hope that he would complete his '4 compass points visit' in the coming year, acknowledging that there were some physical/geographical/political problems with hitting the furthest of the Eastern destinations ... Very entertaining

When they discovered I had osteoporosis-arthritis the consultant said if it wasn't for the fact I had lost my leg I would be in a wheelchair, that hip was that bad. Other one had it as well and About 10 years back, maybe 12, I had to get a mobility scooter as I was struggling to walk. Doctor put me in for some type of injection into the hip joint where they use an X-Ray machine to guide it in. That was under a local and I didn't feel a thing but that was only a long needle. Since that injection I just got better and better, not used the scooter (even for fetching water) for 3 or more years now. I was told you could have 3 of whatever the injections were so hopefully if I need them (and they still do them) that will see me out

I will repeat, no way I will be having a hip replacement under a local, would use a wheelchair first. I was told by some I would have a local and a screen for my heart op but they properly knocked me out, just as it should be thank you very much

Well 5 wks into a New Knee & must admit the Hip is a heck of a lot easier to get over than the Knee ..... Time will heal I suppose .
