How long have you been into Motorhoming and what was your first Motorhome

I went on honeymoon for my first wedding in an orange VW camper. It threw a spark plug en route to Cornwall so that necessitated my having to reach over the red hot engine; through the tiny aperture for engine access; and screw it back in. being air cooled it was red hot when we stopped! I 'washed' using washing up liquid and grit from a nearby riverbank.

We had a week in a field in Cornwall: me, my new bride, our two dogs and my 12 year old nephew! There was one standpipe in the field and we could use the toilets in the pub next to the field. We were absolutely skint I remember and the lad hadn't brought enough clothes for the week so we had to wash/rinse his underwear out and dry it!

For my second wedding we managed to go a little more upmarket

Bought my first MH in 2012. Prior to that I had a Citroen Dispatch with a roof tent on top, which I loved.

I have camped all of my life though and still own about a dozen tents, tarps and hammocks for this purpose.

We have owned many boats though (about 17 I think it is) and loved life on the river in what is pretty much a floating motorhome. Sadly, these days Julie can't go on a boat any longer due to Menieres disease which is what prompted me to buy the MH.

I still keep a small boat for my own use though, and the marina gives us a place to take the van with water point, EHU, showers and toilets as well as a pub restaurant on site.

Our first van was a Bedford CA ambulance that had also been used as a school bus and a coalmans van. Fitted it out with some bench seats we aquired from a local pub that was being decorated and "borrowed" a cooker from an old static. Kids thought it was great at the time and no messing about erecting our big canvas frametent in the pouring rain. Went back to camping after the van died but, now old age has caught up with us, restarted motorhoming for convenience. Present vehicle is a 22 years old New World Cruiser.

I started camping in tents in my teens -got married and then came the first compromise - a trailer tent. Kids thoroughly enjoyed it but then we became infested with earwigs on one trip. That was it - no more camping....... until I spent redundancy money on a newish Swift Kontiki. Had that 5 years until it was written off by another Motorhome on a motorway. Ended up with a brand new Ace Roma from the proceeds - had that for 11 years and had many memorable trips with the kids as they grew up. Moved on to a Rapido 8096df last year and looking to longer trips in retirement in a few years.

No regrets - we were fortunate to be able to start when the lads were young and spend many trips abroad with them.

Technically you could say 48 years since a school pals parents took us to dymchurch in there type2 bay VW in early 70’s!!!!!!
we have only had our own motorhome 4 years.
also depends whether you include trailer tenting or lugging caravans with the kids when they were young in the ‘80s!!!!!

We were tuggers for 20 years and had some great holidays with the kids. When they decided it wasn't cool to go with mum and dad anymore a motorhome was the natural progression.
We bought an Autotrail Cheyenne in 2006 and found that the touring life was for us.We now have a Hymer A class which resides on the drive ready to spring into action at a moments notice which is a nice feeling,we are very fortunate to be in this position and will never forget that.

We've been Motorhoming for 25 years after tents, a trailer tent and caravan when we decided it was daft towing once the kids didn't want to come on holiday with us.

Our first in 1993 was a Holdsworth Renault Romance on a thirsty petrol engine. Quirky design as many Holdsworth vans were. We then had an Eldiss Eclipse on another Renault Trafic, followed by an Autosleeper Symbol then an Adria Twin from new which we kept for six enjoyable years despite a couple of warranty problems, and have now owned our Weinsberg Caracompact for two years and hope to keep it for a few more happy years.

Used tents when young then got boats as i work at them for a living, always wanted a van but could not see the value in them so built my own and its fantastic, wish i had done it 30 years back.

Bought our first camper sometimes in the mid 80's it was a bay window VW think it was an early 1970's one that had been home converted. Managed to get home despite it only firing on 2 to 3 cylinders. Rebuilt the engine & redid the inside. Had a VW vanagon when we lived in California , first coach-built we bought was a Swift Kontiki probably 1990 or '91. Current van is another Swift it is a 2017 Escape & probably the worst van I've ever had.
