How To Build Your Own Castle

I've always been fascinated by large structures built by communities of yesteryear - the pyramids, cathedrals, aquaducts, castles etc.....
In the middle of rural France (north Burgundy) people have been constructing a medieval castle using tools and techniques from the period. The project has been running for some time and now looks the part with completion in approximately five years.
Yesterday we visited Guédelon Castle. It's very impressive:

The Guédelon website can be found here:

Interesting that you say that, Barrie. I watched them hoist a ton of rock using a treadmill with just a rope to dissuade onlookers from getting crushed. The stonemasons wore protective eyewear but spectators were about one metre away. The shards of rock flew off in all directions and I for one stood back. I saw one guy who was working high up on the wall get hurt and have attention from the 21st century first aid kit.
All in all enthralling.and well worth a visit. Do look over the website - it's well put together and full of interest. There's an English option.
