With apologies to Ronnie Hilton, Max Bygraves et al. and credit to Campervanannie:
There once was a mouse lived in an Autotrail Scout
A Scout with a mouse in and he wasn't grouse-in
He sang every morning, "How lucky I am"
"Living right here in such a fine van"

Yep, we have mice in the van :(

A few weeks ago I spotted a nest among the camping table and chairs in our nearside-rear locker. The blighters had chewed some hard foam and picked out the pile of a piece of carpet I used as a kneeling mat to make the nest. There were a few droppings about, but I couldn't find the varmints themselves. I wanted to visit the nearest hardware store and buy some traps; Jan overruled me. So we cleaned up the mess, got rid of the nest, and blocked up all the holes we could find. Nothing further was seen ...

... Until a few days ago, when we discovered droppings and urine in the rear locker on the other side of the van, together with obvious chewing of a padded fabric item. However, we couldn't find the nest or the varmints. So, Jan did some research and found claims that tumble dryer sheets are good at repelling mice. Most of those cited "Bounce", but we only found "Lenor" at our local supermarket. Day before yesterday, we removed all the stuff from all the lower lockers and confirmed that there was absolutely no food in the van. We swept up all the droppings and scattered strips of dryer sheet inside the lockers, on the seating and on the carpets. When we got back home, I ordered half a dozen traps and a bottle of peppermint oil (AIUI, the most effective repellent for mice). The traps arrived this morning, so we headed out for the van.

When we got there, we found that all the pieces of dryer sheet had gone from the rear-offside locker. Presumably, the meeces had either scoffed them or taken them as nesting material. So much for dryer sheets as mouse repellent. TBH, I'm surprised the meeces didn't leave a thank-you note! So we cleaned up everything again, baited the traps with peanut butter and left three in the locker and the other three in other locations on the van floor. As for the nest, there is a void between the rear-offside locker and the washroom. It's only about an inch and a half deep, but I reckon that's where those pesky varmints have set up home.

Hopefully, getting rid of the encumbent residents won't be too difficult. I can then block the access to the void space. I'll also leave cotton wool balls soaked in peppermint oil throughout the van and use battery-powered ultrasonic repellers when we need to leave the van for an extended period.

ive heard mothballs act as a repellent..........mr admin can tell you all about the meece tight meeces.......

pre-baited traps work a treat, packs of 3 in Proper Job. we get them every year or so,

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, we store about half an hour's drive from home; so a cat's not viable. I understand that mothballs are more effective than peppermint oil, but they're also toxic. However, I will probably resort to mothballs if I can't keep the mice away with peppermint oil and ultrasonics. I've heard that pre-baited traps are great, but I've gone the peanut butter route. That said, I'll probably invest in some "Big Cheese" bait if the traps aren't visited and there's still evidence of mice.

That said, the next installment is due tomorrow, when we take a look to see if we've caught any of the varmints...

At the moment my score is ?????? and no returns but forget the peanut butter, Mars Bars are the mouse snack food of choice in Cheshire ??

Johndotty use peppermint in there van with success at keeping them out, they was always in there van as it is kept on a farm they would be into everything and chewing everything up but not anymore

Forget the big cheese stuff, our meeces treat it like a mc'donalds takeaway. Mothballs havn't worked. Still working on them.

Slightly different,we had squirrels in the loft, they sat in front of us and ate mouse poison.

Be careful, you need to make sure you get rid of the squirrels, they love eating electric cables and can cause £000’s of damage.

Don't waste your money on ultrasonic devices, they don't work.
Have a look at mousetrapmonday.com , this guy has tested just about everything going and busts a few myths along the way.
Korky.

My issue is that we have to leave our van unattended in storage (in the country) for up to three months when we visit our son and his family in Australia. Scented repellents don't last that long. Mouse traps have to be inspected daily. So (other than going over the van and plugging up any holes) the only thing that I can think of to deter 'new' mice from taking up home in the van during long unattended periods is ultrasonic devices.

hmmm, sounds like a right pain :( My cat likes kipping in the van in the summer but it tend to be closed up this time of year in the driveway.
time for a regular pussy patrol session I think :)

Don't put the locations of mouse traps on here. That could alert the Animal Liberation Front. If they break in to rescue the mice, they would do far more damage than the mice. And, how do you know the mice aren't reading this thread. :geek:

I take your point, but they still don't work, so why waste your money?

Peanut butter seems to work fine. ??? ? ? over three days ATM, and the traps were empty yesterday -- so, hopefully, I've got all the original inhabitants. I've now moved to stage 2 and left cotton-wool balls impregnated with peppermint oil in all the lockers except the one in which I caught the meeces to repel new boarders. I've also left the traps set in case I haven't yet got all the meeces; so I still have a daily hour's round trip to check the van.
