We had the badly installed central heating system removed yesterday; the poor installation included fitting (where it landed) pipes of too narrow a bore and then adding reducers in the loft, and leaving behind 50% of the previous back boiler in the chimney recess, and a thin plywood 'Inspection hatch' at the side of the chimney breast amongst other delights ...

This left a naff veneered mantle piece on top of a marble plinth and back plus an electric heater with faux coal display, so I set about removing these items. Here is what I was left with .... Tasteful, or what ...?

If you convert it to an open fire make sure the old back boiler is properly drilled and vented. They have been known to explode when not properly disabled.

The remains of the back boiler as was (i.e. its 1/2 cadaver) have been exhumed and removed by a SEPA licensed operator. A new flue for the new Bosch Greenstar boiler is being installed today, and *when* we find a plasterer who will turn up, the chimney and informal inspection hatch will be sealed and vented

Depending on how old your house is there may be something mote interesting behind that blue paint and plaster and or board
