Intermittent door step on Autocruise Rhythm

The side door step on my 2014 Autocruise Rhythm is only operating intermittently. Some times it works reliably, at others it fails completely. I've waggled all the connectors I can find and squirted contact cleaner into them, checked voltages on the switch and I can find nothing.

Given that the wiring all emerges from the mythical "PSU C460" according to the wiring diagram in the handbook, and that the step auto-retracts if you start the engine with the step out, I'm wondering if there is a problem in the C460. Two questions:

1. Where is it, physically
2. Does anybody have any info on it?

OK, this is no longer an intermittent problem.
The step itself checks out fine but there's no action when the switch is pressed. I've buzzed the wiring through and checked the fuse, but no joy.

I’m pretty sure the switch is OK. I’ve buzzed the wiring through as far as the switch, and applying 12V to the supply pin causes the step to operate when you press the switch. The problem is lack of volts (OK, amps) from the EC400 controller.

Regarding the mythical "PSU C460" I suspect that is what Autocruise refer to as a variant of a Sargent EC400, that's my best guess anyway.

You have checked connections but does that include on the back of the EC400 itself? I haven't worked with an EC400 before but have changed the later Sargent EC700 unit on mine, there are a lot of connections on the back of that model (over 20) so suspect yours would be similar. It is quite feasible that it could have been intermittent at first if the step control connector was not fully pushed in and now that it has stopped altogether the connecter has worked out even further or dropped out altogether (there is a dedicated step output connector on the EC700 model so again suspect you will have similar).

If you haven't already done so, take a lot of care if you need to pull the EC400 forward to check, don't know what yours is like for access but there will be a lot of wires and I would make sure everything is switched off with no EHU in place. I also disconnected the leisure battery and removed the vehicle battery fuse when I did mine. But if you can wait I would consult with Sargent before you do anything, their technical support is very good although they're probably closed this week.

Excellent thoughts, @AllanD. The EC400 is fairly accessible in our ‘van. I did take a quick look and you’re right: there are a LOT of wires.

I’ll take a closer look in the new year.

@argoose - I’ll keep this in mind.

We had this issue which I eventually traced to a poor leisure battery. To stop it happening again I set the jumpers so it only operates if you press the button or start the engine. Control box with jumpers was under floor behind driver seat. Constant operation responsible for draining battery
