M6 Toll

Apologies I forgot to post this last month. On our way out to France this time, the kind lady in the toll booth told us that the C&MC 50% discount for caravans and motorhomes for the M6 toll road is being discontinued from January 2019. Another reason to review whether we bother rejoining.

Do you just have to show your membership card to get the discount, be using the toll in a couple of weeks, how much is it for a motorhome over 3500kg?

You just give your membership card to the toll operator before you pay, card or cash. The toll varies slightly depending on weekday or weekend, but a motorhome is normally around £11 less 50% discount, so worth having until next January.

Thanks for the info, I shall make sure I have my card with me.

Is it really worth using the M6 Toll? I have only used once when I forgot to come off the motorway and don't recall any difference over the usual route.

It depends on

It depends on when you are travelling. At peak times it can save quite a bit of time and be far more relaxing. Most of the time it’s not really worth it.

It depends on the state of the M6 roadworks and traffic conditions on the day, but the loss of the discount makes it less likely for us unless we are late and in a hurry to get to the Tunnel.

I once tailed a big bursner mh heading north on M6 think it was the stig driving it we split I took toll road paid £11 and he took normal m6 honestly I was raging when we joined normal M6 again he was just in front of me

I wont use the M6 Toll Road because I see it as just another 'nice little earner'.
John Prescott was inspired to champion this venture based on our European neighbours road system.
What was never mentioned at the time, was that the Europeans build their motorways with private money, and the tolls that we have become used to paying are split between road repairs and private investors.
We pay Road Tax and our money should have been spent improving the current M6.
To pay tolls, is a step in the wrong direction, when we are all paying into a compulsory Road Licencing Fund already.

Rant over...... preparing for incoming!

No incoming from me, it is whast it is and you pay your money or not as the case maybe. Personally I would prefer not to use the M6, toll or otherwise, in its current state, but on occasion there isn’t a practical alternative.

Seconded.

Thirded. I believe people only ever use it by mistake. Unless they have an expense account. I'm guilty of using it in error.

I don't make mistakes

I'll miss the discount, but still use it as my daughter lives near the toll road. Its less hassle as well. The cost of fuel avoiding it would be more than the toll.

We live close to the M6 Toll & always use it when we are going to Birmingham Airport. Less likely to get hold ups with accidents etc. Mind you, it's usually at night so less chance of accidents but it's cheaper then too.

As can be seen, for most of it’s length the A5 and A38 run almost alongside,so for local trips it can be easily avoided.

Just to be contrary, I always use it. Not because it’s quicker, though it often is, but because it’s far more relaxing.
