In the 80s we did that sort of thing without an autopilot.

I watch deadliest catch every week. For those who aren’t aware it’s about crab fishing in the Bering sea. They fish in horrendous conditions, gale force winds and regularly 30 foot seas.
There is usually a medivac every 2/3 weeks, no fancy autopilot and the crab boats are usually being tossed about in heavy seas.

If you have autopilot then you would be a bit dumb not to use it, especially when crews have died previously.

We tend to take SAR with a pinch of salt until you see what they have to do in all conditions, I'd imagine without some automation they would not have set out in such a fog, IFR or not.

Automation undoubtedly adds to safety in difficult conditions, but before it was developed similar conditions were operated in without an autopilot.
