In the 80s we did that sort of thing without an autopilot.Some amount of skill, never mind the fuel burned.
Automation undoubtedly adds to safety in difficult conditions, but before it was developed similar conditions were operated in without an autopilot.If you have autopilot then you would be a bit dumb not to use it, especially when crews have died previously.
We tend to take SAR with a pinch of salt until you see what they have to do in all conditions, I'd imagine without some automation they would not have set out in such a fog, IFR or not.
