I blithely assumed that being in the middle of the sea, and it probably being breezy, Orkney would be midge-free. Now I’ve come across some posts and am not so sure. Could anyone who went last time let me know the real situation? I am very keen to come whatever the position but would like to be forewarned - I have Skin So Soft from a Dumfries and Galloway trip in June last year when we did not need it!

Got eaten alive at Broch of Gurness in August 2019. Day was still and misty with light drizzle. Only day in 12 when they were a problem, but they are there waiting for the right conditions.

I have been in various weather conditions four times in June and have never had an issue with them. They are more likely to be around in August.

We went last year and didn’t see a single midge. Sue

Never seen a midgie there and been 3 times. Journeys there and back have been the same apart from one year on the way home when we stayed a couple of nights close to a loch. Avoid water if there's no wind and you will be fine.
