I have recently bought a mobile router. I bought what was supposed to be a 6GB Data only sim (EE). However, it says on this one that it is 4Gee wifi with 6GB of data. It also has a phone no on it. If it was data only, why the phone no? It looks like I have to use the no to register it so I can buy credit which I then have to convert to data. I can't see data only sims on the EE website. Have I been sold the wrong item by Amazon? Should I send it back and look for something else? If so what - the router is unlocked.
I just knew this was going to be anything but easy, not knowing what I was doing despite You tubers saying how simple it is.

All the sim cards have a number on. I use Three and they are the same. I just pop in a new sim when the old one runs out. You can get a 24gb for three on ebay for £44, lasts 2 years. You need to look for Internet with Legs.

There's not really any such thing as a data only SIM anymore as you can put any SIM in a mobile router and use the data allowance. I live full time off grid and use a Giffgaff SIM in an LTE router, adding a £20 'goodybag' monthly which provides 80gb data plus unlimited calls and texts, which of course I don't use. This is more than enough to cover working from home plus some tv streaming and general use. When travelling, I just take the router with me. Giffgaff do also do an 'always on' option at £25 per month, but it slows down after 80gb. There's no commitment, and you can vary the goody bag each month to suit. I also have one for my phone that gives 9gb plus unlimited calls and texts for £10 per month.

I did try Three, but found the service very unreliable with lots of drop outs and slow speeds.

Ok, well. I said I don't know what I'm doing. I have a Pay as you go Giff Gaff sim in my phone, but I won't be swapping between the phone and router but I could get a £20 goodybag but I only need it when I go away. If I put a sim in the router, will it become locked to that particular provider?

No, the SIM can be used in any device and won't get locked to one.

You could order yourself another Giffgaff SIM for your router and just put a goodybag on when you need it.

These People usually do a 24mth x 24 gb deal but the one in link maybe worth a look but don't consider topping it up dump it and buy a new one when it expires nothing complicated just put it in your router an away you go

I just used an EE sim, £20 for 40gb, lasts 30 days. There are better deals ( more data) out there if you look, Voxi and Smarty were mentioned when I was looking for a sim.

That is what I do. and the 24 months doesn't start until you activate for the first time.

It is a bit confusing for the technophobes. Took me ages to work it all out! The phone number attached to SIM is used to check how much data you have left, have to register and login on the providers website. I would be inclined to send the EE sim back as 6gb is not very much data, but depends on how much it cost. Smart do 30gb for £10 on a monthly basis using 3 network.
We have a 3 data only contract at home and just take the sim with us when we travel in our mobile router and I supplement this with using my (vodafone) phone tethered when three network is not great.

How about this from EE, changed my phone package in May. £24 unlimited data yes it has a tel no. In a router, carry it about from van to home new watch and a new phone within the bundle and the WiFi is better than virgin cable at home, so that went saving £30 a mth, yes i have 2 sim 1 wifi 1 for phone.THE whole bundle is costing me less than last year by £40.

In a router, carry it about from van to home new watch and a new phone within the bundle and the WiFi is better than virgin cable at home, so that went saving £30 a mth, yes i have 2 sim 1 wifi 1 for phone.THE whole bundle is costing me less than last year by £40.

You have unlimited data from EE for £24 per month? That seems like a good price. How long are you tied into the contract?

Three also do unlimited sims that last 90 days and cost about £58. Mine has about a week and a half left to run (but I have a couple of spares in stock).
It's done well. In the last week the data transfer has been nearly 200GB

I have EE fibre broadband at home which includes home phone and free calls all the time and also 1000 minutes of free calls on the landline to mobiles. I use giff gaff for my mobile. I found what appears to be a good deal at carphone warehouse - EE 100 GB Data sim 1 month for £28 but they have another one that looks the same but it's £40 and also 1 month. I don't understand - is there a catch - why would any one go for the £40 one if the £28 one is the same?

Sickening. All the cheap deals are on the 3 network, and I have to travel miles from home to get a signal! That said, my EE service is great, if not cheap. I don't pay for a landline. About the SIM number: EE send texts about the service to my Netgear router, which have to be cleared occasionally.

just last week got a new phone for jan the i phone 11 already got a couple of 3 accounts they could offer a deal for existing customers 4 gb free calls & texts £23:50 first 6 months £47 next 18, affordable mobile had a deal on the same phone samenetw with 100gb for £41 asked 3 if they could match it sorry no , carried on looking found same phone 100 gb £99 up front £31:50 a month , that’s a £715 with 100gb a month for £756 spread over two years,

I use my EE phone account (60gb/month/£24) and ‘tie’ all my devices to it. I can use it anywhere in EU so no need for a satellite - yes I can still even get bbc! The data gives me plenty to stream/watch tv and movies on line and most places in EU have a good signal (unlike UK!). The contract gives me a choice of monthly choices - Amazon Prime, BT Sport but the one I really like is the one that gives around 54 countries in which the phone and data can be used as if you are in the UK. I used it for 8 months in NZ a year ago (shipped van over) and could call anywhere in NZ and back to the UK, also anyone in the UK could call me as normal. The only downside was people in NZ would pay international rates to call me so had local sim in other phone for that. The ‘Fair use’ policy did not seem to matter.
I may put a Wi-Fi router in the van and tie it to the phone to see if that works...

Although I reckon that EE is the best in the UK, in France, their roaming agreements are only with some networks, so there are holes in the coverage (or places wit very poor data speed) that you don't get with other networks' sims when roaming.
Aren't there roaming charges using an EE sim in NZ?
