Motorhome door seals and FLIES.

Has anyone had problems with flies getting inside the habitation door and/or the cab doors up against the door seal in what appear to be groups? I went to my van today and as I opened the hab door there was a cluster of what looked like house flies there. They hadn't gotten indoors and were wafted away but they were obviously grouping there for a reason-probably the cold weather. If you have, did you solve the problem and if so, how? The hab door in question has an inner and outer skin which meets all but 3/8" all round it and I may be able to insert a draught excluder type strip in there to stop them getting in at all-don't know yet, haven't tried it but may try a temporary fit to see if it works first. Ideas are welcomed too please. Cheers all.

Hi, I have a very, almost phobic hate of small bitey insects, I have removable midge nets over all my vents & the rooflight including the floor vents.
I get in & out of the van as fast as I can to try & stop the wee blood suckers getting in & I don't, (can't at the moment) , travel anywhere on the west coast in the summer.!

flies are more of a nuisance, but I'm with you on trying to keep them out.
you say you have a small gap in the door seal, is it possible to slightly bend the door frame to make this section fit better, ie., my car door didn't close properly at the top & it let water in, so I opened it, opened the window & bent the top in a bit to make it seal.

It might work for your door.

Its not a door sealing problem. The door itself seals perfectly against the inner seal. Its actually the way the door has been manufactured. I'll put a picture of it here to show it.


The flies are actually gathering just inside.

They are gathering where the white line and the black line separate-i.e. in the top right hand corner of the void between the door and the seal.

Here is another shot, showing the gap between the outer door panel sheet and the inner one.

The void between the two panels is on the right of the door edge shown here. Its about 3/8" wide and about the same deep.

They are most likely Cluster flies, that is the real name for them ! They gather together to hibernate apparently, usually in loft spaces. Google them. I would have thought a tin of fly spray would solve the problem :Wink_Emoji:

They aren't that much of a problem!:Waving_Hand_Sign_Em A good squirt with an old flit gun(remember those?) would probably see me off as well as them -lol! But one swish of the hand and they were gone. All the usual points of entry on the bus are well covered-in grilles that is! I'm thinking more of putting some sort of soft rubber/silicone strip around the door skin void to stop 'em 'clustering.' Could always try and get the council to serve an anti social order on them. Ha ha. Second thoughts, they're far too busy tucking up immigrants.:b0221:

Go on ebay, search for rubber door seal strip, you should find something there to do the job.

My MH is stored externally in a rural area and at the start of every season all 3 doors have these flies clustered at the top of the door exactly the same as yours! In the 7 years of MH/storage it has never bothered us. When I enquired of the storage owners they said it's quite common and the flies are just hibernating in any dry dark place. When I open the door they are so sleepy a quick flick with a cloth and they're gone until the start of the next season!
