At one of the bbq’s my son had in Guernsey the other night I got talking to one of his pals who has a Concorde Liner over there. He was telling me that under Guernsey regulations, because his van exceeds certain dimensions he has the following restrictions:
- the van can only be moved under police escort which has to be applied for in advance
- the van can only travel from their home to the ferry port
- the escorted journey must take place between 9pm and 6.45am

Somewhat takes away that “it’s a nice day let’s head off for a few days” impulse that so many of us motorhome by.

With such restrictions plus the expense of ferries, it surely must be more cost effective to store the thing in the UK or France?

A Gurnsey couple who we met in Greece told us that as caravans and motor homes come off the ferry they are directed to the very close by campsite. No longer on our destination list.

Jersey used to have curfew on HGV vehicles but I haven’t been oven for about 20 years now so may have changed. Back then though you couldn’t take a big motorhome over I don’t think and any caravans were owned by residents and very restricted.

it makes sense as the roads are small and tourist traffic very heavy. Some roads I used to go along had the hedges touching both sides of my car which was probably the width of my van cab or less and Some were stone walls almost touching.

If you want to take a Motorhome or caravan (beware dimension regulations) to Guernsey you can only make a ferry booking in liaison with the campsite where you must make a booking to stay. You must stay every night on that campsite but can use the van during the day. There are 3 or 4 campsites and a new one has just opened at Beaucette Marina.
Knowing your van Katherine I would not recommend Guernsey. I have been driving a VW Transporter around and even that requires frequent forays onto the pavement to pass other vehicles!

I see little advantage and many problems with taking even a small motorhome to such places
Isle of Man Isle of Wight etc
Isle of Arran is Ok especially if you use it as a stepping stone for Lochranza to Claonaig

Fly (or ferry ?) and hire a car or get a package....... for me small places with limited journeys just do not do not seem worthwhile.
We had a not really god enough experience on Sicily despite its attractions...The same would go for Corsica and Sardinia...Great destinations but not in a MoHo
PS we do not like ferry trips ..Short ones as in Norway OK but otherwise No Thanks

The Isle of Man is motorhome heaven. Roads generally good, excellent facilities and places to stay both sites and wild. I’ll be there for 3 weeks soon, and with some great motorcycle racing thrown in.

I can't help but feel taking a motorhome to Guernsey would be a waste of time and money.
The saving in ferry fare and campsite fees would surely go a long way to accommodation and getting about costs?
It's not a big place to explore is it?

Fully agree with you. Buses take you everywhere for a flat fare of £1 and you can cycle round the island easily in half a day.
