Just want to let fellow motorhomes aware of a new change of vehicle dimensions with the Nationwide Flex Plus breakdown cover.

On the 1st March the AA will be taking over this cover after winning the tender process, previously it was Brittania who covered any motorhome up to the length of 8 meters and 7.5 ton.

Once the AA take over maximum permitted length will be 7 metres and if in Europe the maximum weight allowed will be 3.5 ton.

I have already sent feedback complaint to them regarding this and suggests others do so. Just want you all to be aware of this so you don't get caught out.

The info on the Nationwide Website and their PDFs is incorrect. There will be no restrictions compared to the current cover.

Please be aware that Nationwide has reissued a document that goes some way to rectify our concerns but it still leaves a major issue for European breakdown cover

max Height 3m
max width 2.3m

Vehicles broken down in the UK
• Maximum vehicle weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
• Maximum vehicle weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
• Maximum vehicle width: 8ft 3in (2.55m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points. The restrictions to the length in the UK have been removed.
Vehicles broken down in Europe
• Maximum Vehicle weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
• Maximum Vehicle weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
• Maximum vehicle length: 8m (26.2ft)
• Maximum Vehicle width: 2.3m (7ft 6in)
• Maximum Vehicle height: 3m (9ft 10in)

Curious to know what the basis of a complaint would be given the new cover from March for Europe is no different to the current cover?

European breakdown for motorhomes now appears to have a maximum height of 3m on the new terms whereas on the previous terms there was no mention of a height limit for motorhomes but a 3 m limit for all other vehicles

so a 3 m height limit will restrict all over cab coach built motorhomes for starters and probably many AClass motorhomes especially when taking into account satellite dishes roof racks etc

reading various sources on facebook it would appear that Nationwide has been informed and are looking at a work around ,I suppose we will have to wait until they send out the revised documents to all their members to be certain

I don't agree with you about the old limits not specifing a height limit for Europe, but it doesn't matter.

You don't need to wait to see the numbers that will be sent out - they are quoted in the reply I posted. Better get that complaint in ;)

UPDATE FLEXPLUS COVER
Letter I received this morning
Dear Mr
Following up on my email of last night and having worked through your issue with my team, we have positive news for you. And, if I may, a request for a little more advice from you on how best to reassure other members who own large motorhomes.
First, a little bit of background.
We periodically review our contract for Breakdown Assistance through FlexPlus to ensure we continue to give members the best service and value that we can. We had agreed a change to the AA on the basis that the cover would be at least as good, if not better, than the existing provider.
The motorhome dimensions question you raised was something we had identified through negotiations with the AA as needing enhancement from their initial proposal. Therefore, motorhomes of 7.5t, 8m in length and 3m height (as per your specific query) WILL still be covered. This will be confirmed in the communications and new policy documentation which FlexPlus members will receive from us in a couple of weeks’ time.
Given there is no degradation in cover for members, our plan has these communications going out a month before the switch to the AA. If there had been any negative alteration in the cover we would clearly have given more notice to enable members to have sufficient time to make alternative arrangements if required.
However, we did need to flag on our website that cover would be provided by the AA ahead of these communications to existing members to ensure that people buying FlexPlus for the first time were aware.
Your question prompted us to discover a mistake in the information on the website regarding large motorhomes as it was taken from an early version of the policy NOT the finally agreed cover.
Thank you so much for alerting us to that issue. We are currently updating the web site.
Also, in going back to the AA as a result of your query, not only have we been able to confirm that the AA will indeed cover vehicles of the specifications you outlined but that they will now cover ANY length of vehicle for recovery in the UK (subject to the other dimension restrictions) for our members.
Given the concerns you also alerted us to around the AA’s ability to recover such vehicles, we have had further reassurance from them that they will do so even if it means having to use a specialist 3rd party if their vehicles aren’t suitable.
So just to confirm for you, in terms of length, the cover will have no limit in the UK and be 8m for Europe, and for weight the cover for motorhomes will be 7.5 tonnes both in UK and Europe. Other dimensions will be ‘at least as good’ as our existing policy, including having no height restriction (vehicles of course will still need to be within any legal limits).
I apologise for the confusion this oversight with the website has caused but hope you are happy with the action we have taken to put things right.
Now for the request given your evident understanding of the motorhome owner community!
You mentioned in your email that many other members with large motorhomes are frustrated by this change. As explained above, they will see the correct information in a couple of weeks when they receive their new policy documents. However, if you have any suggestions on the best way for us to confirm the right information to these members in the interim to save them from additional hassle or concern, we would be very keen to hear. For example, if there are any fora where you have seen this discussed, we could investigate responding directly.
Once again, thank you very much for contacting us, and thank you for what I hope will continue to be a longstanding membership of Nationwide.
Kind regards,
Sara

Very useful - Our Autotrail is 3.05m high.Nationwide have progressively increased the costs of the Flex Plus account and significantly reduced the benefits cutting guarantee extensions, scope of mobile cover and interest. The benefits now cost £156 per annum. Whether that's still good value is a moot point!

The UK Breakdown Cover is still competitive at the £13/month if you are over 3.5t compared to RAC Arrival. Add on the mobile phone cover and Travel Insurance and - again if you are within the scope - and it is a pretty good deal.

The Euro Cover if the 3M height limit is strictly enforced (and you have to assume it is to avoid being caught out) is not good though (My own Autotrail is same as yours - a touch over the 3M). RAC Arrival and the C&CC version of it don't include Euro cover as standard at all and might have similar limits? (I was speaking to a friend of mind who is an RAC Patrolman about the general limits and he said that when a recovery is on the cards they are required to take the measurements to check they are within policy limits).

Just looking at the C&CC RAC Arrival intro ...
"No size or weight restrictions on motorhomes"
and
"Designed in partnership with The Camping and Caravanning Club, Arrival Breakdown from the RAC is the best breakdown cover in the market for caravan, motorhome and campervan owners in the UK and Europe"
Those two together would suggest no limits or restrictions in Europe either?

As a C&CC Member, UK Cover is £17/Month for 2 people on personal cover, and European Cover is an extra £96/Year - so £25/Month for the pair (so a fair bit more than the FlexPlus cost).
The summary includes this:

What types of vehicles are covered?

We cover cars, motorbikes, vans and campervans. There are no height, weight or length restrictions.

So might be the safer option for a tall (or >8M) Motorhome taken to European. The extra £150 a year over a FlexPlus account could save a greater expense compared to no breakdown cover?
