New bank account from Chase bank

When I were nowt but a boy my father worked for what was then the Savings Bank of Glasgow, having gone back to the bank after the war. Occasionally he would be late home because ”they couldn’t find a balance.“

I'll stick with my Nationwide account. Free withdrawals by debit card, free purchases with credit card, £13 a month gives me European travel insurance, European Breakdown & Recovery, mobile phone insurance....

The bane of a Banker's Life! Balance the Tills, Balance the Day's Work, Balance the Ledgers, then Balance the Rems [Remittance cheques despatched to Head Office for entry into the Clearing System],and the Credit Clearing and where a first time balance was termed 'a Shooter'. And the soul destroying process of 'Calling Back' the posted entries when there was a difference, resulting in interjections of resigned humour to keep everyone awake. 'Forward Thrust £x' instead of Forward Trust for the Credit Clearing, and, to distinguish the Private Account from the Farm Partnership Account when balancing the Ledgers, 'Brown R. Sole Account'. Every bloody week ...

'Twas 39 years ago last week that I started with TSB, having left Barclays the previous week, because TSB were prepared to pay for experienced staff. In an era when the annual payrise was about £150-£200, plus a 'Rise within Grade' of a little over £100, a salary increase to £9093 with TSB from £7874 with Barclays was very welcome! My initial salary with Barclays in Sep 1970 was £411pa, subject to O Level results, but by the time they were available, the annual Pay Award had been granted, so I started on £441pa. Woohoo ...
