Not Europe but USA/Canada 2020 about 6 months

Hi all Tony and Mojo and CV in particular.
But anyone with knowledge experience or suggestions
However please do not suggest
1 Buying in US or Canada
2 Leaving Moho in US or Canada over winter and doing a 2nd trip in 2021

Plan A Use Halifax NS both ways minimum 8000 miles over 6 months OK but a bit too far

Plan B (as of today)
Use Baltimore both ways (Seabridge)
2 possible disadvantages,
A) USA Visa as I would want to tour Canada as well for up to 3 of the six months so would need to exit and re-enter USA (this should be OK
B) longer sailing time when we are homeless but this is outweighed by the advantages

However many advantages
A) 6500 miles only (I know it will be more)
B) Cheaper flights
C) more relaxed journey times thus more scope for minor detours
My plan could be return flights to New York
I believe NY to Baltimore could be easily arrange by Train or Bus or Internal US flight or car hire
Car hire may be good

Route Baltimore to Kamloops via Toronto Edmonton.
Then Calgary next USA and yellowstone Denver West Virginia and back to Baltimore to drop off Moho

Any thoughts please In Particular
1 Which way round to do the tour
2 USA double entry visa 2 x 3 months would work as the main time in USA would be just under 3 months then there is the drive to Canada (or back)

BA fly direct to Baltimore daily, may be easier than going to New York. Assuming heading anti clockwise, the stretch from Toronto to Edmonton could become tedious as there’s not a lot of variety I would think. Whichever way you go it would be great to get to the stampede in Calgary https://www.calgarystampede.com/visitor-information and or the Sturgis motorcycle meet in South Dakota. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgis_Motorcycle_Rally
I’ve been to most of the Southern part of the route and it’s got loads of interest, maybe worth a little diversion West of Denver when in Colorado as the scenery is amazing.

Thanks for all that.

Not particular about NY but we will have time to kill without MoHo and I have a nephew in NY so 3 nights there may help on the way out...

On the way home Baltimore is favourite but a bit depends on if Seabridge will allow my winter storage agent to collect MoHo foer me and put bit straight into store ass then we cn fly to Thailand whilst MoHo is in transit...No big deal either way !
If USA visa works as I think it does we might change our route as below. Checking again on ESTA it appears this is OK as you can use the ESTA several times within its validity as long as each visit is under 90 mdays

I’d say that that route would be much more interesting. As far as ESTAs go, I always use mine four or five times for each validity, but that is always staying less than 90 days and returning to UK.

Yes Thanks I think so..
ESTA Arrive Baltimore exit to Canada before 90 USA days are up maybe 2 months in Canada then return to USA to drive to Baltimore again within the 90 days. I do not actually plan to visit Chicago but follow the route roughly
I will also only need 1 visa for Canada....which is more costly..
For less than 90 days the US system SEEMS very very good ! and your experience confirms it...Thanks

I'm pretty sure a shipping company had/have a stand at the motorhome show this/last week so maybe Phil spoke to them and could give you some info.

Just watch the timing with American visas because they start when you first enter US and keep ticking while you are in Canada and only stop when you finally depart North America. If you shipped into a Canadian port and stayed in the Canada for the first part of the trip then the US clock only starts when you first enter the US. B1/B2 visa is the alternative but it is a pain to get and not cheap either

You can cover a lot of ground in 6 months. We started in Dallas Texas, then to Niagara, right across Canada to Dawson City and up to the Arctic Ocean via the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk, across the top of the world highway into Alaska, all around Alaska and back down south to New Mexico in a bit over 5 months and that included several lots of sitting in one spot for up to a week at a time

Thanks Very much Tony..
I was looking at an ESTA for USA (90day) arriving at Baltimore on the understanding that I could do say 50 days in US.
Driving within USA via south Dakota Montana Exit to Canada for 50 days.
Reenter USA for another 50 days (up to 90) or something like that...
You seem to be implying that exiting to Canada and re-entering USA does not give me another 90 days in USA.
I have read the web-site and I think (only think) I would be OK But I suspect your opinion is correct as you have done it !
I do note the visa section talks about airport entry and not land ! (with regard to visas etc)

The last thing we want is to be stuck in Canada when we plan to return to USA and Baltimore.
SO safety first and indeed last .
Just a matter of which way round ?
In some ways flying to Halifax first may suit us
Especially if when we ship home from Baltimore to Liverpool (10 days + 3 + 3) if seabridge allow our storage agency to collect the vehicle from Liverpool as we can fly on to Thailand whilst the vehicle is in the early stages of transit.
This will cost (maybe £200) but it will save us 2 weeks accommodation in UK and allow us to get back to Thailand at or just a bit later than our usual time (mid september)

Should this be a problem the alternative..is ( as before)
To ship to Halifax Tour in Canada for say 80 days
Then enter USA and drive to Baltimore
This is not favourite at the moment as it would mean a long drive in Canada starting from Halifax
I appreciate that Halifax to say Toronto is good but then it seems a long tedious drive to Calgary.
However this is not a disaster as you post in 5 or 6 months you can cover a lot of distance and still have easy/rest days (or 2)
It is a fairly simplistic view (but it works) say 8000 miles in 160 days = 50 miles a day
Easy enough to travel 100miles or even 150 or 200 if needed and dare I suggest even easier in USA and Canada

In some ways exploring Nova Scotia and New Brunswick appeals...
Also the shipping time to Halifax is only 7 days thus easing our "No home" time

Thanks again..The USA time is clearly a vital issue

Update.. Multi city flight are sensibly priced (£1100 for both) and overall maybe best
  • OUT London to Halifax direct
  • 3 months in Canada driving West
  • Enter USA (Montana or Wyoming)
  • Drive to Baltimore
  • RETURN Baltimore to London (via Toronto)

Several friends shipped various RVs and trailers from Baltimore and anything not nailed down was taken. I shipped a car years ago and they were siphoning out the 'gas' before my taxi had gone 100yds. I went back and castigated them and luckily the gas tank was still full at Southampton.
The Walenius terminal Brunswick is owned by the shipping line and far less pilfering goes on there.

Ray.

The area of Baltimore around the city centre at the harbour is lovely, and safe. However many other parts of the city are certainly to be avoided.
