Old Renault car….

The car in the image is a Renault 8 (R8), a compact rear-engined family sedan produced by the French manufacturer Renault between 1962 and 1971 (with production continuing in some markets into the 1970s).

Key Identifying Features:

  • Boxy shape with rounded edges
  • Rear-engine layout (air vents on rear fenders and rear trunk lid)
  • Thin chrome bumpers
  • Small round taillights (not visible in this image, but characteristic)
  • Classic steel wheels with simple hubcaps

The Renault 8 was known for its simplicity, solid engineering, and was one of the first French cars to come standard with four-wheel disc brakes.

I drove a couple of Renault 12s. The first was really comfy and a pleasure to drive, the second less so.

One of my simple pleasures is delving through thousands of our images to remind me of past places visited, and the incredible distances covered in a single day. With the degree of highway maintenance currently being undertaken, I suspect that I couldn't manage some of them today.

Ah, that takes me back, it's the rare Gordini variant (or a damn good replica). My mate had one in the early 70s and it was scarily quick for it's day and far better handling than the renault 4 he had previously. If I'm not mistaken Trev I believe the rally winning Skoda Estelle had a lot of the Renault 8 design in it's DNA.

Best car I ever had as a young’un was a beautiful red Renault 16 (reg AWS 3 L). It had armchair like seats and all mod cons (e.g rear screen wiper)! To me it was one of the largest cars on the road. Saw one last year in France and compared with today’s cars it was miniscule.
Replaced it with a Renault 12TS which was nice enough but just didn’t compare with the 16.
Both cars came out of the Renault garage at Gilmerton, Terry, which subsequently became the BGS core store which I visited frequently.

Agree, I had a 16 in 1973, so comfortable and the column change was great. Very versatile underrated car. Bit of a strange one for a young lad some thought, but they didn't realise it could be arranged into a very reasonable courting bed :sneaky:

I remember BGS core and the garage prior to BGS. I vaguely remember my dad taking me to the garage during school summer holiday, he took me to his work sometimes, which was the NCB Scottish HQ office @ Greenend, then walk down to the garage a lunchtime to drool at the cars.

Core store now a Lidl’s, NCB HQ, are now apartments.
