Perfect brakes!!

My 2008 self built Renault Master had her MOT test today and I was amazed to hear that the tester found she had absolutely perfect brakes that he suggested were better balanced than even a brand new van coming off the production line!!

Now this isn't any old MOT station but one which is owned by a well known and recognised man in motorsport who never minces his words.

So my efforts fitting new discs all round as well as rebuilding all 4 calipers and fitting new pads, along with a total flush out of the hydraulic fluid has worked wonders.

It's nice to receive a pass certificate with not a single advisory.

Oh by the way, just in case anyone living in the area might want to know of a truly excellent garage, it is Greetham Garage, Great North Road, Greetham, Oakham, Rutland. Tel: 01780 411456 www.greethamgarage@hotmail.co.uk, all makes MOT's Class 4 & 7.

If you know the A1, travelling north from Stamford, there is the Total filling station at what was once the Ram Jam Inn, it is the garage that is directly behind, but is not really accessible from the A1.

They are doing quite a lot of test these days on motorhomes and campervans.

Julian Cardew is the man and you will have to travel a long distance to meet a nicer bloke and his team (and if you are into rallying or general competition cars, then Julian can chat the hind leg off a donkey).

I wish he lived and worked nearer Scotland, there are a severe shortage of proper mechanics and specialists with motorhomes up here. Lots who will take your money but not many you would want to return to.
Good for you and nice to hear such complimentary remarks toward the team.

I use C and D Grant near Renfrew for MOTs and servicing on my van. Very good service there.

Scotlands a fairly large area ;) where abouts are you? I could point you to a couple of places that might be handy for you.

Might be a bit of a generalisation, but the garages that tend to be able to actually fix things (as opposed to just swap stuff with fingers crossed) seem to be run by people involved in rallying! the two garages I have tended to use for my vans are both family businesses who are/were into that.

I used to be into rallying and autotesting and in my spare time (a long time ago) I built a Formula Ford Lotus 61 for one of my friends and when we went to his first race at scrutineering it was failed as the tip of the exhaust pipe protruded too far beyond the rearmost part of the bodywork.
Tod thought he wouldn't be able to race, so instead I made a very quick modification by fixing an old Castrol GTX 1 gallon can to the back of the gearbox, punching a hole into the cap where I pushed through a length of pvc pipe at the other end of which I connected it to an engine breather.

Rolled the car back to the Scrutineering bay where it was given an immediate clearance and my friend was able to participate in his first ever race... It was just the same in rallying where out on a special stage it was amazing how you could lash up a get you home repair!!

I think what you have described above is a perfect example of why these "rally" garages are the ones to go to. The ability to think 'out the box', especially with older kit makes a big difference to being stranded waiting for parts or getting back on the road :geek:

My apologies for the delay in replying, wasn't aware you had enquired. We stay near Perth or Dundee. Midway between both. I wouldn't mind travelling to meet the right people to work on the Hymer.
If you do have any suggestions I would certainly follow it up.
Best regards, thanks for your input.
