Problem changing avatar

In a moment of madness I decided to change my avatar. I went into edit avatar on my profile and deleted my existing photo. I then chose a new photo and clicked on ok. All that happens is a yellow bar scrolls across the top and 3 vertical bars scroll left to right. When all this finishes no avatar appears! I have tried several times over. What is this luddite doing wrong please?

Don't know what I did but the new avatar has appeared now - maybe just impatient!
