Rant about avoidable rusting... Grrrr...
I have moaned about this before but due to a recent repair being necessary on my 2004 PVC I'm again feeling aggrieved about the careless attitude of the converter of my van. Careless as the rust has been caused by IH motorhomes during the conversion and could have been avoided by a small and cheap change in their production methods.
when the holes required by various vents and Windows and access doors were cut in the base van, the nibbler cuttings were just allowed to fall into the sill area. The holes themselves were not treated on their edges before the various in-fills were fitted. So, from day one these edges and cuttings began rusting. IH of course don't give a damn as the van would be out of warranty before this insidious problem became apparent and by then be in the hands of the second or third owner ( ME
).
its infuriating to see an otherwise great condition van need welding because of this sloppy workmanship. It's not as if IH are building their vans on a budget and you would think they would want to have a good reputation beyond the warranty period.
so, if you are looking at an IH of this vintage, or even newer, then look hard at the sills that might look fine from the outside but could be really rotten inside, don't be afraid to press really hard on the inner and outer sills right at the bottom near the seams.
OK, Rant over... I'm going to have a lie down now
