Refillable gas bottle

"the bottles were approaching the 10 year limit"

There is no 10 year limit. They are lying to you.

My autosleeper has a factory fitted underslung tank that has a ten year life span ,Marquise gouted £1500 for a replacement, ??? LPG NOT exactly a win win .
For your privately owned, end-user refillable bottles, you are legally required to have them tested every 10 years, note the word Tested, not changed.

This contentious point raises its head periodically, it seems refillable bottle retailers don't as a rule offer testing.
It would be useful if you could post a link to the relevant legislation to help clarify the situation, or indeed to the source of your information.

Had this one sixteen years and that figure includes the repairs, averaged over the years.

[Later] though on reflection, there are quite a few non-garage repairs I didn't include. Perhaps £1k per year might be nearer the mark.

Nothing as much as like the loss of interest on the capital tied up.
But they don't make them like they used too

Can you recommend a testing company??

Not unless you hire out your van. For private use there is no such requirement. However manufacturers do say the valves should be tested/changed every 10 years. Nobody does this for LPG cylinders.

Well, actually, the replacement is the same make as the original, though it is a smaller size (I replaced a 100l with a 70l to get better ground clearance).

It is now about eight or nine years old and looks good as new.

It is actually wearing better than the original, probably because they painted this one with anti-chip paint.

The old one was the original red paint
