Road map

Are you getting the ferry in January to Spain or do you intend driving through France to get to Spain, I hope the weather is settled in January, but it's been very unusual and unsettled so far in November, I think you could be right that it's best to head to southern Spain first, but it can be cold in Spain in January.

We have normally gone to Thailand for 3 months in January to escape the winters, so this will be the first time we will miss, although I did say to the Mrs only yesterday that if the weather doesn't start to improve soon here, then perhaps we should go to Thailand for January and set of in the motorhome in February. Have you been to Spain in January, my cousin who lives here said that had some snow last January here.
Yes, there was snow momentarily...even on the beach ! However, most January days you could be in a t-shirt in 19 degrees even though you could see the snow on the mountains in the distance !! It does go cold in the evening so we either get back to base for more clothes or carry extra with us. We are near Murcia now having travelled down through France early November.....we will spend 2 months over Xmas period on the costas. Maja (Oh....we'll be going via Granada.... we do slip in the odd bit of culture now and again LOL !!)

We've done this for the last 6 years and France in Dec and Jan can be miserable. Last year for the first time we used the ferry direct to Santander and drove home back thru France this year probably both out & return trips will be on this ferry.

Thanks for your reply, I'm seriously giving the option of catching the ferry to Santander in January consideration and then returning via France in March when the weather is likely to be better, looked at prices for one way and it seems to be from £340 to around £ 400, depending if you do the economie or cruise option.

Oh I do like Granada, been a couple of times, we used to spend a week in February In Marbella and then end up into the mountains in Sierra Nevada via Granada and spend a week skiing, the pistes were not the nicest nicest as prefer mountains with trees on them that I can ski through as opposed to what I call motorway skiing. I hope this January turns out to be a sunny one, has November has been strange weather this time.

That is what we were doing for 2019, but we later decided to treat ourselves and have booked Santander both ways

The wife wants to tour in France as we haven't done it before, so one way would be the best option for us this time. Perhaps on other occasions if we do not like France then we might consider catching the ferry both ways.

Hi Mobil, France is beautiful....it's huge and lots to see....just not over winter as is freezing !! The other problem with France is they tend to charge lots of money for anything that vaguely involves enjoying yourself....as in eating or drinking out !! (Probably why many of their villages/towns seem deserted as you drive through LOL ?.....and why they're famous for making lurvvve coz it's free !!) However, we have stayed over at a number of vineyards for free when buying a case of the red stuff (the other thing the French are good at !!) So, there you go....it's knowing when to do France and how you do it !! There's an Aires at Chablis free with ehu if you buy some of their delightful white wine....which we did after a serious tasting session LOL !! Hey-ho....... Maja
