Probably best done before leaving. May have issues with activation on anything other than its own network.

I think you could send them an e mail and ask them to activate it.But as said I would do it before leaving UK.
We did think about using our measly 12gb from 3 and then activating but it works out less than £1 day so why bother.
Still working fine in Southern Spain............I think it's the future for UK motorhomers

For £50 you can get a 4G 120gb ee SIM which lasts a year from eBay. As long as it's activated in the UK it's fine for roaming. I've used one in Spain and Portugal for 90 days for the last 3 years without any problems.

popit still working fine for us 3 rd month now watched rugby & her soaps on it no problems , think you need to activate in a phone before fitting into a mi fi device & probably best done at home heir live chat service is good as well really helpful when joy was struggling they gave her adam the owners personal number
