Smart meters

You don’t need any sort of meter to tell you that your house is lit up like Blackpool illuminations and your tumble dryer and washing machine is running 24/7 and your sky box, computer, 4 TVs alarm clocks all on standby and all costing.
 
I remember the free light bulbs - I got two lots as I was in the middle of switching supplier. Totally useless as they were all screw in and all my lights have a bayonet fitting.

Npower want to give me a smart meter. I don't want one. I just keep cancelling the appointments they make. I don't need a meter to tell me that turning on any electrical appliance or my central heating will cost me lots of money.
 
For me, the useful bit about having a smart meter is not having to send in any readings... the meter sends info automatically. In practical terms it does little else other than be a meter!

As for the monitor that shows you what you're using, you don't have to use it or even get it out of the box and plug it in if you're really not interested... it makes no difference to the meter itself. To me it's just like checking the control panel in the van to see how much drain there is on the batteries. I've found it quite useful now and then, especially when I noticed how much the iron uses when I sit down and take a break without switching it off. I've never done that again! :eek: It's surprising how little energy things actually use on standby but I discovered that leaving a phone or tablet charger plugged in all the time uses power, even if there's nothing attached. It's like any tool, comes in handy when you need it but forget about it when you don't :)
 
I actually have a smart meter our supplier insisted on it but the plug in bit is still in its box.
