When I think about it I have never actually used it as a drainer but have boiled the spuds over and I still mopped up as I always kept the plug in so fat splash from frying didn’t go down it.

Could be that the previous owner used it as a drain, hence the rusting on the burners. I couldn't understand why that had happened but that would make sense.
