SOCKS, do yours last for next to no time?

Grand, it’s not just me then.

I, well okay SWMBO, bought a pack of five pairs from Tesco on our last visit to town just before lockdown so early March and I think they’ve all gone in the bin now.

I thought I had found the answer to my prayers when on visiting TKMax I found some wool mix sock that were made in the USA, so I thought I would give them a try. Yes they did last longer than all the other recently purchased socks from anywhere else, but in total, they only lasted a maximum of 14 days per pair.
My next purchase will be to try out some of the mohair socks suggested by @saxonborg

I bought a 2 pair pack of American made socks years ago. I forget where I got them, may have been abroad. When I eventually got round to opening the pack I found that they had no 'feet'. They were just a tube of wool.

I tried them on but they felt weird, so I binned them. :(

All mine are hand knitted have over the years had a few shop socks given me but usually pass them on following Xmas Ideal knitting for a woman while in van easy to pick up an put down light to carry and a sense of pleasure when you see your man wearing them :giggle:

Yes my hand knitted are long lasting and super cosy. But too warm for summer.

I have been wearing bamboo clothing for over 10 years, now. I can now sweat but not stink! (property of bamboo) BUT, holes appear in my socks far too quickly these days. The last set of socks (I also buy bulk, all the same) started showing holes, as previous ones have, but this time, I went to our market and bought a darning mushroom and darning thread. I'm using my late mother's sewing equipment. As soon as a hole appears, they now get darned. This is extending the life of the socks by at least a factor of 5. It takes very little time and I feel better as I am repairing rather than continually buying new (thinking of the planet!). I'm surprised others haven't mentioned this. I can't be the only male doing this?

sorry but try taking them off, one day at a time.try not to be a stinker, try wheelies, with no socks. what a pong.ok.pj. ad-ee-orse

I was a sock machine technician for 25 years, we supplied M&S and I can think of a few problems why these socks we buy now
firstly the heels and toe areas used to be reinforced , not any more, and the quality of the yarns are very inferior ie not the same denier (thickness)
we were making some socks for Adidas and the yarns were poor quality, and on the machine next to it were for Sainsbury's , much better quality yarns, and the Sainsbury's were a quarter of the price

Must be a man thing... takes me years and years to even wear a thin patch in socks.

It's because you spend so long sat on your arse, not out hunting and gathering like us men folk lol.

As someone said, I buy multipacks of matching socks and bin the single one when too holed. Only cheap from the market/supermarket. Probably not the best for the planet, but it is cotton usually and not polyester or whatever...

I would pay more if they were guaranteed to last, but it doesn't seem to happen.

I used to darn my socks when I was younger (talking teenage age!) but I haven't done so for many decades.

In normal circumstances, I'd put you over my knee for such an inflammatory remark but since lockdown.... well...
Let's just say my arse has taken most of the pressure so far and is expanding into its enormous support role more and more each day 🤪

If I'm deserving of such a punishment then maybe it's right for us to both don masks and be done with it....

Um, er, whilst I'd like to make positive comments about your arse, I'm told it's not appropriate!

Since I started this thread, I have now found the most amazing and best socks I have owned in years and years, superbly comfortable and so far they appear to be exceptionally long lasting.
Although they are described as being work socks I don't find them to be too thick at all and I am able to wear them when wearing any of my shoes.

https://www.laulax.com/collections/men-work they aren't sold out it is simply that the Covid 19 is stopping them updating their site.

I wear boots most of time , as a preference, about 4 years ago bought some K2 ski socks in TK , stopped getting holes , and they dont seem to be going in that direction so have bought them when I see them as a stockpile . In shoes wear pure cotton , but go thru the toes quicker than they used to :(

Well I am a little different to most of you and only wear one sock anyway 😂😂😂

I buy multipack trainer socks which is what I normally wear with my shorts 👍
Yeah but what no-one knows is that you always wear odd ones. You've gotten away with it for years too... it's about time people knew the truth 😝
