Staveley Head and AIB Insurance

Hi. First post for me. My Motorhome insurance is due for renewal in September. I was with Caravan Guard last year and they have quoted £650 for 7000 miles. Staveley Head have quoted £474.80 for 10000 miles with otherwise almost identical cover. I have read some bad reviews about Staveley Head so has anybody here had experience with them or had a claim through them. I have not yet contacted AIB that give a discount for Wildcamping and Motorhomer members as I have also read very bad reviews about Markerstudy who are their underwriters. Has anybody had experience with AIB. NFU gave a really good quote and cover but for some reason they would not cover parts and possessions in the van overnight unless the van was stolen, which I found very strange. I did 7800 miles this year in the van so need cover for upto 10000 miles to be safe. Thanks for your help.

Hello and welcome. I have AIB insurance, it is a really new policy so I can't comment on how well they would handle any claim or issue

I chose AIB on the basis that out of all the companies I talked to they made the whole process of getting a quote really easy. Also they were able to offer 6 months European breakdown cover which is something I wanted.

You can cover your personal belongings in the van under your home insurance all risks section away from the home.

Hi Carrersax. Yes I had thought of that but it also states parts and accessories as well as personal belongings. I doubt if I could include that sort of thing, like the tv, kettle, spare parts etc, on my household policy. I have had about 12 quotes altogether and NFU are the only company with that exclusion. Thanks anyway.

Tv & kettle should be ok as they are not spares or accessories specifically related to the vehicle. Check with your home insurers first to be certain it’s ok.

AIB has a panel of insurers, If you would prefer a quote on an Aviva policy then ask them to quote you for that. The Aviva policy they offer is the same as the one that Comfort offers.

Always have came good for me ,been with them a few years now and got bumper damage on way home from France when we were parked up,called aib, then a company called us and it’s to go in when we get the van back for repair,no cost to us and xs untouched etc ,very happy with aib ,first time I’ve had to claim

Friends of mine are currently making a claim with Staveley and are very unhappy with the lack of progress. Their Camper was parked up and hit by a runaway car with no driver. Handbrake had not been applied.

Thanks for that. That's what bothers me. Both Staveley Head and Markerstudy appear to have bad claims reviews. I think I will phone AIB and get them to give me an Aviva quote rather than Markerstudy. No point in saving on the premium if you lose out on a claim. I have not had a claim in over 25 years but who knows what is round the corner.

Thanks for all your input. In conclusion, I have decided against Staveley Head as they appear to have a terrible claims history and AIB were not competitive for my post code and quoted Highway as the cheapest. So, I have decided to stay with Caravan Guard as they have first class reviews and have been very helpful in my phone calls to them

I can only report that when my van got damaged they were on the ball organised a body shop for estimate and repair to be carried out
Great service is all I can say esp as I never had to pay anything at all

That sounds like great service. However, the quote from AIB was with Highway, who have a good reputation, but was higher than Caravan Guard for the same cover. Caravan Guard has an excellent reputation so I thought I might as well stay with them. Will try AIB again next year. They seemed to think that it was my postcode that was causing the high premiums. Thanks for the info

I know that this is a bit late for alun 100, but just to add for anyone else reading this thread that we are with 'Comfort Insurance'. They have been very competitive with their quote for the last 2 years and include European breakdown cover. Luckily I have no experience of any claims, so cannot comment on how good they are should I need to claim.

Thanks for that. Comfort were the 1st company I contacted as they have an excellent reputation. However, they were dearer than my existing company Caravan Guard for the same cover. I will try them again next year. I get the impression it’s my post code that is causing the problem although why I don’t know as there is a very low crime rate in our area
