Supaguard - is it worth having?

When my partner was finding out about getting our motorhome cleaned properly outside (he recently broke his shoulder so can't do it himself) the cleaning man told him about getting a Supaguard treatment and said that it would restore the whiteness and make the van look new and lovely and the treatment would last for a few years with just a regular wash to keep it looking nice. I can only find poor reviews online about cars getting this done and I wondered if anybody here had any experience or knowledge of this and whether it is worth the expense or not. I am sceptical. Advice welcomed! :)

These products keep appearing every few years just with a different name, but all they do is make your wallet a lot lighter.
A good compound polish and seal will be far better and cheaper then just regular wash and polish.
Keep on top of it and it is easy to do.

But lets add some caveats...

- Any polish is abrasive so needs to be used with caution. It works by gently scouring the surface to even out other scratches.
- Using a rotary polisher is the best way to apply polish but this needs extra caution especially regarding the cutting compound being used and especially regarding the disc being used..and especially if its being used on a GRP body!
- Waxing: no problem - fill yer boots (a high carnuba content is best) - however waxing does not last forever...or even for a long time really on a vehicle that is outside in all weathers, so will need to be reapplied regularly.

If it was me I'd pay for an expert to clean, polish, seal and wax my MH and then get the best advice from them on how to maintain the finish that they achieve. No way would I take a rotary to my MH. On the cars that I have detailed I did them by hand: much longer but much safer.

Be very wary of using any cutting compound on the metal cab area of your van or a PVC.The paint layer is very thin as compared to a car.

Some years ago Mrs Frogman won a complete valet at SMC motorhomes, Newark, with a product called Jewelultra Diamondbrite. I don't know if they still offer the service - but it won't be free! This was on a 5 or 6-year-old 2003 Burstner Elegance. We were very pleased with the result, even more when people started saying how new-looking we'd kept the van, and we hadn't even mentioned the treatment. So, are these products worth the money? I obviously couldn't say, but the van certainly looked good.

I don’t know about Supagard but we had a car treated with a Williams Ceramic treatment when we bought it nearly 5 years ago and it has never needed polishing. When washed it still has a showroom shine and the water still puddles and runs off just like it has recently been polished and waxed. Because of this when we bought a new motorhome recently we decided to have a Paintseal Ceramic Treatment applied. Too early to say how well it will fare.

It is expensive and although some diy products are available it only works properly if the vehicle has been scrupulously cleaned and the Ceramic finish applied very carefully. I no longer feel up to polishing and a broken shoulder would certainly be a reason to look for something more permanent. Some of these treatments are PTFE/Teflon based (about which I have no experience) and others are Ceramic (more expensive). Supagard has described itself as Bionic, which suggests the ad agency hasn’t looked up the meaning of the word. It would be more helpful if they said something meaningful which makes me a bit suspicious.

Yeh I had Supaguard treatment on my Lexus a few years back, not really worth it in my opinion although I seem to recall it did come with some sort of warranty guarantee for the paintwork.

Best thing is to decontaminate the paintwork and apply a decent wax or sealant.

Thank you for all your replies so far. We had it cleaned today but are still pondering the whole Supaguard thing.

We have recently bought a new MH after owning caravans for many years. As you will all know about the black streaks that form on caravans and MH. We had a Paintseal direct ceramic coating applied. So far so good I am using the Paintseal detergent, the MH comes up a treat, dead flies on the bonnet and front just wipe off, no rubbing. I think it is a brilliant product. We did have it applied by Paintseal themselves so we have a 5 year warranty, the paint finish is so smooth.
I would recommend it.
