I am going to collect a car on 18th September from Blackburn. Not wanting to have Tes drive me there I decided to research train travel.

My journey is:

Walk to Henley-in-Arden station 0.7 miles
Train from Henley-in-Arden station to Birmingham Moor Street Station (local train)
Walk from Birmingham Moor Street Station to Birmingham New Street Station (I have 56 minutes)
Train from Birmingham New Street Station to Preston Station (Virgin first class, reserved front facing window seat with table)
Change train at Preston for the train to Blackburn (local train)
The car dealership is 0.9 of a mile walk from the station

4h 23m

Total cost?

£31

Bargain price the fuel would be double that.

I love a train ride! If ever I go any great distance by train, I always check the Tickety Split website. You can save a bundle by splitting the journey into sections (usually into train company areas), rather than book a ticket right through. You still sit on the same train(s) but you might have 6 tickets instead of one. I checked out Horsham to Barnstaple once and the full cost was well over £100, whereas Tickety Split came up with under £50! As with many things, I read about this on the Money Saving Expert website.

Congrats on the new car Phil... may you enjoy it in good health, as my American friends used to say x

I know a joke about Range Rovers and hedgehogs, but there’s always an exception to a rule. Enjoy the new car Phil and hope that your journeys are fruitful.

Phil the spiv ;);) like rangeys, but only the Mk1 & Mk2, probably not the best image for your purposes though Phil.

I'd like an overfinch Mk2, like the one Clarkson thrashed the Focus in while towing one

The later one is no slouch either

Forgot to say, apart from all the walking and transfers it's a good deal, last time I looked at a train journey, Leeds to somewhere in Dorset, it was a fortune, I think it was cheaper to fly, bus was cheaper, but in the end I got Liz to drive the car back, and I drove the van we'd just bought.

The last time I took a train was from Exeter to Plymouth and return a week later. That was about 10 years ago, and it cost a small fortune. However, I just checked and the same journey can be done for less than a tenner second class and £21 first class. I'm gobsmacked!

That said, the best value I've seen is the Falcon coach service between Plymouth and Bristol Airport. We had a lot of issues with our MH and needed to return it to the dealers several times. The first couple of times we drove another vehicle to Taunton (>100 miles each way, so >400 miles total to drop off and pick up the MH). Then we discovered the Falcon service: £5.50 'age concession' return (full price is only £8.30) Taunton to Plymouth and back!

It looks like public transport might once again be an affordable option!

Whilst researching the right version/engine for me I tried to decide what I really needed, then looked at what I wanted.

Engines

3.0 SD V6 diesel 288 BHP - 600 Nm (443lb ft) Torque - 37.7 MPG
4.4 SD V8 diesel 344 BHP - 700 Nm (516lb ft) Torque - 32.5 MPG
5.0 Supercharged V8 petrol 503 BHP - 625 Nm (461lb ft) Torque - 22.1 MPG

Even the smallest engine is 288 BHP with a 0-60 of 6.8 seconds and a respectable 37.7mpg. So that is the one I went for.

Next came the model and gadget level...

There were some things that I did want:

Electrically deployable tow bar
Electrically deployable side steps
Reversing camera
Front parking sensors
Heated windscreen
Climate control
Air suspension
Automatic 8 speed
Bluetooth audio
Dark leather seats
Air-conditioned front seat
Heated seats front and rear

And some things that I did not:

Self-parking (too much to go wrong)
Meridian Ref audio system (a fortune to repair)
Sunroof or glass roof
Rear climate control (I won't use it and it is another thing to go wrong)
Electric rear seats

And basically, that is what I have.

It is a used car with 70,000+ on the clock but is in good condition.

Will it ever go off road though ;);)

What a smart looking car loads of nice tech wheels looks great the dogs bls I like the sport as well been looking for something nice for a while always fancied a panamera but a sport would be my second choice. Can’t wait too see it probably sway me away from the Porsche

I think my Astra has electric rear seats but dogs don’t know how to use it. Thinking about it though I think it’s heated rear seats but dogs still don’t know how to use that stupid mutts! Don’t tell them I said that though, they can’t read, said they were stupid!

I did get a train to Stockport a few years back for one new car, Caz dropped me at Buxton station then single train ride, after 9in the morning as costs are double before then to fleece the workers. From the station a taxi to the garage so no walking, the walking bits you state would make it inaccessible for me so taxi costs would increase it a lot.

With sensible head on I find that when ever I have looked public transport is not really an option, the walk to the bus stop is to far to start with :) I do have a free bus pass thing though I have never used it. I have said to Caz about jumping on a bus or train but she looks at me as if I am crackers, she does th@tba lot anyway though so it may be she just c@nt hear me as usual :)

Does anyone know what key combinations on an iPad result in symbols instead of the letter you ‘think’ you are typing as it may be useful when I want said symbol? I can see the @ symbol greyed ou above the a but I have to press the numbers key to change layout to get it and I am not doing that.
