Awww, don't be too hard on yourself Kev. I know wearing a pair of specs seems obvious now that someone has pointed it out but as we get older problem solving for even those simple tasks gets harder.
Now, before you ask you can get special underwear too for those 'awkward situations'

My eyes are just crap on small text.

Try 'pinching' out the text with two fingers. Works on my Android phone inside a message.

It works on mine too David, but then you have to move the screen around, where as if the text could be made larger it would wrap.onto the next line etc.
