The Beer Thread

There was a member on FACTS that started a long running beer thread (Ralph Dot), I think there was one on the Wildies but cant remember (probably drank too much beer) so I think we need one here.

I spend the night over in Bury outside Manchester last night with Sandra and Albert (Aldra on here) and I have been hankering after some Leffe Rituel for ages since I quaffed the last of my supplies from France a few weeks ago. :frown: Albert had a garage shelf full of the stuff and not only did he allow me to put a hole in it but gave me a big sack full to take home. I arrived there weary and knackered at 6pm after doing some real work for a change in Manchester and battling for two hours to get round the M60. Albert stuffed two ice col Rituels in my hand and I have to say it was like that moment in Ice Cold in Alex. "Worth waiting for" At 9% it was like having half a dozen Tequila Slammers! Smashing. A bit like Leffe Blonde on steroids.

I am not a fan of British Ale preferring the Blondes and beers of Germany, Belgium and Austria. Some of the stuff I had in Bavaria this year was just fantastic. What annoys me though is the availability and price of the stuff I like in the UK. For some reason when it crosses 22 miles of sea run of the mill stuff like Leffe is considered "exotic" or "World Beer" with an exotic price to match. :frown:

So whats your tipple? What will you be quaffing over the festive period?

My other half and son drink only Weisbier and they will trawl the shops looking for new and different ones last Xmas they ordered £285 worth of the Internet.

The best ale I've ever had was one from a micro brewery. The landlord brewed small quantities, just for his pub. It was called Guisley ghyle. Not to be taken in quantity but lovely for winter.

Had a long spell working near Marlow where I found a small brewery which had several brewery tours / open nights a year and people could join their club

its called the Rebellion Brewery And if your ever passing you can call in and sample the beers they are very welcoming

i callled in one Friday evening on way home to buy some beer for the weekend and it was heaving with people sampling !

Thats what I was drinking in southern Germany in July. Even the little Stellplatz we stayed at on Brombachsee had a little hut selling the stuff but you could buy all sorts of different ones from the supermarket for peanuts. Its bonkers prices here though. I was searching for Leffe Rituel which in France was less than a tenner for 12 bottles. This is the cheapest Ive found here apart from Kegs of the stuff which you need a £250 keg machine for. https://www.drinksupermarket.com/le...N1_6XYkQR6R0lODjJgNQ7KZBqT4kYseRoC0H4QAvD_BwE

Does anyone know where to buy blotting paper as there seems to be folk on here requiring some drying out.:Smiling_Face_with_H

Too many great beers to pick a favourite. But Thornbridge Jaipur is one I find hard to resist. As a CAMRA member since long ago I’m very fortunate to have some excellent real ale pubs within a short bus ride or comfortable walk of my home. And I’ve been lucky enough to visit, amongst other places, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic - purely in the interests of research you understand ?.

I don't like artificially chilled beers. If they were any good they wouldn't need the taste freezing out.

I far prefer a pint of something that's room temperature, preferably with bits of twigs floating in it. Stuff like Broadside or Abbot from East Anglia. I love the stronger beers they bring out at Christmas, like Stingo or Winter Warmer.

Your lucky then as we seem to cater for that sort of stuff here. I dont like real Ale and your choices are limited for the stuff I like. I used to go to the odd beer festival with my pals and of course it was all Real Ale so I ended up drinking the only other choice. Scrumpy (with twigs and stuff in it probably). Great, but last time I ended up waking up on a farmhouse table in the middle of nowhere.

It's probably partly nostalgia. When I was a child, my father used to bring home a barrel of ale and set it up in the larder. I would nip in and scrump a small glass when I thought he wasn't looking.

These days I even get excited when I walk into a pub and find it sells mild. (Not brown and mild - Just mild.)

You are right though, some of those blond(e) beers certainly pack a punch. I can't drink too many of them before falling over.

I need the loo more often these days too, but that's a different thread..........

When I left school I got a summer job working on some government scheme sorting out Pensioners Gardens. There was one old chap, smashing bloke who I think just had us there because he was a bit lonely and not very mobile, there was not much wrong with his garden. Turned out he made his own Stout / Guinness type drink and he invited us in to try it. He reckoned it cost him just a few pence a pint. It was absolutely cock on and we spent an entire afternoon getting lashed and laughing and joking with this guy. Turned out he was a bit of a war hero so we had war stories and free beer all afternoon (whats not to like). We were supposed to allocate around half a day per garden but ended up going back about three or four times to see this old fella. Quite a character.

Yes some of those Blondes are definitely wobble juice and way too easy to drink. I cant decide whether to eak my Leffe Rituel supply out for Christmas or just get stuck into it tonight.

I had a skinful last night, and we decided to move to another pub and watch a local band.

The only bitter they had on was IPA, which I don't like and is a pretty weak excuse for a beer, but I had no choice. Once it was served I took a gobfull and it was like vinegar, my mates said you can't drink that it stinks! Now, that sounded to me like a bit of a wager, and I thought, it'll be ok once I've filtered it through me kidneys, so I did what any sensible person would do, and downed it in one.

Big mistake!

Always drank lager but of late I’m drawn to spitfire ale ,taking a like to it ,very pleasant indeed (in moderation ) of course

I seldom go out Rob these days unless I'm over in Europe in the summer. The choices for me here are dire and at four quid a pint for Stella or whatever which is rubbish its a dear do. Last night out I had cost me seventy quid and a taxi home if I can't crash somewhere is £40! The local pub is great but its a Michelin restaurant now and more focused on food really.

anyway I'm saving the leffe for Christmas so will be making Vodka cocktails tonight. Blimey I sound like a right Pish head!

I couldn't face another beer after the bad one last night Barry, in fact, I can still taste it now.

So, once again, I did what any sensible person would do and went onto the spiced rum. I rarely drink spirits, but it had the desired effect.

Only the best for me and that is the king of beers.......Budweiser.

Personally I’m a stout/Guinness or real aler.
found a great craft beer bar in Malaga once.
generally choice a bit limited in France/Spain.
