For anyone who missed it first time it`s on again tonight, They Shall Not Grow Old, BBC2 9pm.

It has to be one of the most moving WW1 documentaries i`ve ever seen and should be on the curriculum in schools IMHO.

I`m not known for my emotions but this seriously put a lump in my throat and brought a tear to my eye.

We must never ever forget.

Fred, i`m waiting patiently for you to arrive after and you will have pride of place on my living room wall, i will never forget the 21 Sept 1916.

Missed it when it was first shown. Luckily, I saw earlier in the day that it was being shown again so managed to record it. I watched the first hour as it was recording so still got the last half hour to watch. Brilliantly done, with the first 25 minutes in original footage and then changing to colour and smoothed projection.
I said to my wife today that I think she would find it too upsetting to watch. We cannot begin to imagine as to what it must have been like. My daughter teaches history and the First WW is high on her curriculum so will show this film to the students. I don’t read books but have just bought The Last Fighting Tommy, so glad that I was able to see this film before starting to read the book.

Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks is about WW1 and is one of the best books I have read
