Hiya, I'm doing some Outer Hebrides Island hopping in mid-July including the islands of Barra, South and North Uist and Harris. Can you recommend any places to overnight in my wee Renault Kangoo campervan? Cheers fellow travellers. Degsy

Although our tour was a few year back in our then Dethleffs, we had no issues finding spots to park for the night. I reckon you will have no issues with sourcing spots?

If you get the chance, and weather permitting, take the boat trip to St Kilda, weather scuppered trip for me.

Thanks for your reply. Its a busy time of year on the Islands and 'official sites' are saying stick to the recognised campsites...

Our trip was beginning of July too, we were very lucky as the weather was fantastic. We did Oban to Barra, the whole four hour trip was spent sitting at the stern of the ferry in glorious sunshine. Return was Stornoway to Ullapool, make a point of visiting the HMY IOLAIR monument, North of Stornoway.

I can’t advise on how the camping situation is now, and I said earlier, I would doubt you would any issues parking with your vehicle, which is more discreet, and ideal for what you have planned.

We are off to mull and arran tomorrow, slow drive up from Coventry..First stop Carlisle then left around Galloway forest .
Wilding all the way ..calling in once a week to sites to service van.

You will love both islands, can I ask how you planned out your ferry crossings?

We haven't booked yet .as we dont want to be rushed but online with calmac.
There seems to be dates available prices around £50 one way.

Ardrossan to Brodick, Arran has to be booked. Then leave Arran at Lochranza to Claonaig, Mull of Kintyre, I don’t think you have to book this ferry, rock up and go?

Oban to Cragnure requires booking. Personally, this crossing is a bit of a mess with Lord of The Isles drydocked (maybe by now back in service?) A828 to Corran, then the short Corran crossing onto Morvern Peninsula, no booking required for Corrancrossing.

Then head to Lochaline, from there cross over to Fidhnish, Isle of Mull. No booking required for this crossing.

Depending on your time frame, you can leave Mull via Tobermory to Kilchoan, no booking required. Kilchoan is on the Ardamurchsn Peninsula.

Overall, these routes take you through eye watering countryside, much is single track road.

Best to check via CalMac website the no need to book crossing remain this way?

Well it's good job we didn't book ferry to mull .the mrs has changed her mind, to cold and wet ,this next week heading south.lol

www.visitouterhebrides.co.uk has loads of information, including a map for motorhomers and caravaners. The map gives service points and permitted places as well as sites. Ask the locals about other spots.
Don't miss Vatersay. There is a community hub and cafe with toilets and showers near the £10 a night parking places.

That is a very good link, Meg, lots of good info.

When we did Outer Hebrides, we booked site every 3/4 days or so to top up electricals/batteries. Well worth the trip.

The parking spots here are fantastic. The two beaches are wonderful; especially the one with the quiet waters: like the Caribbean.

I think it is the west beach and bay where the memorial is to commemorate the the lost souls of the Annie May Shipwreck.
