UK Insurance that covers New Zealand

Hi Thinking of buying a new van, registering it here, shipping it to New Zealand touring for 6 months and then selling van before returning. Problem is finding a UK insurance company that will cover New Zealand most seem to stop at European cover. Anybody know any UK insurance company that covers NZ?

Insurance is much cheaper in NZ so may be worthwhile looking there first, also it's not a requirement if you can't be arsed with it,I never had any for nearly thirty years driving over there.

You don’t need insurance!!!!!!!!!

No,it's always been optional, pity we don't have that sort of freedom in the UK,but that's the blame culture working for the greater good (of lawyers).

But what happens if you have an accident that's not your fault, say, surely the lawyers would be in business then?

We gave up the right to sue for injury,in return for wages and medical treatment,I believe it's about 80% of your earning at the time of injury. If it's a permanent life changing injury then you'll generally get compensated by the government, from levies taken from employers.
This explains it better than I can....

Why not buy and sell in NZ Much simpler.
If you plan both NI ans SI I have read it is better to buy in Christchurch SI and sell in Auckland (NI) as most people do the opposite
Buy yes get insurance of some description.
Go 4 it NZ is great !

We found MH's very very expensive in NZ although Jays [member] hit lucky with one he bought. One we looked at was $92,000 for a 16 year old Cantor. Was a beauty though!

Despite the above, we may buy next time we go over for 6 months or possibly take ours over and sell it there, Swifts fetch top dollar in NZ!.

What about the van?

HI this cropped up a couple of months or so ago in MMM, where a couple bought a new van in the UK had it shipped to NZ and sold it when they left. Paul at Castle European http://www.castle-european.co.nz/ They even managed to get an agreed sale, subject to no damage on their van before they landed and spent 3-4 months touring in it. IIRC they covered their costs cheers alan

The person at fault pays up,the cops will attend most accidents and usually find someone at fault. Minor bumps can usually be sorted with the person at fault,I got rear ended back in the 80s,my bumper was stuffed,we agreed on 300 dollars and went to a cash point, sorted! and a great weekend at the pub☺

Useful
We toured NZ in 2014 for 1 month (only). and would love to go again
The idea of sending MH to NZ and selling it there after maybe a 10 week tour at maybe a better price than UK appeals greatly.
Then return to UK with cash for a newer Vehicle. This seems like a Win Win Win situation..Maybe too good to be true !

Many thanks for all the replies. Turns out Asterix is right and you do not need insurance for NZ.
However without insurance and if involved in accident your fault or not and you may be left to fund any repairs yourself.
Anyway we have decided to tour NZ for 5 months this winter. So looked at renting a van.
The cost to rent a decent van for that period is about NZ $307 per day. Our trip is for 140 Days based on the quote below we would be looking at hire charges, with standard insurance of NZ $43,012 or £/NZ X Rate 1.8 £23,895. Add on all inclusive insurance @ $49 per calendar day NZ $ 6860 or £3,811 Total Cost £27,688.
WEKA - TRIBUTE 625 - 2-4 berth

Very comfortable vehicle and well set up for freedom camping, and all fitted with large 100w solar panels, large water tanks, LED lighting, and LPG heaters for you freedom camping comfort. Unlike some other rental vehicles there is no need to plug into power every day or every other day, saving you heaps on camping fees if you are into freedom camping.

The £27,688 cost of rental came as a bit of a shock. I had read on here, the wildcamping site and other sites and forums about people who had successfully imported their own van.
So I made contact via email with Paul Graveling of Castle European Ltd. motorhome import services.

After a few emails and plenty of advice as to what will sell easily in New Zealand I decided to buy a new Swift Champagne 622 130BHP Automatic. This will be delivered in July and shipped to New Zealand in September. I will let you know how the plan goes and costs in future posts.

Wow that's a bleedin fortune!! The insurance quote is way over the top,I'd think the hire company is pocketing a nice little earner out of that,if you shopped around I think you'd find that rate per month, rather than daily as quoted.

I have shopped around and they are all coming back with similar prices we will be there for their summer and peak seasonal rates. The basic insurance is included but without the excess cover @ $49 a day they take $5k off your card. Any damage is paid for straight from your $5k. If you click on the link WEKA - TRIBUTE 625 - 2-4 berth you can check them out. I have joined NZMCA and had a quote for new van from Covi NZMA Insurance for $926 fully comp. A similar van in NZ commands a premium price typically $120K plus, hence high insurance costs.
