Updating a Kindle

I've had mine for about 6 years now a paperwhite and was used when I got it, it still does what it did when I got it but was considering updating it, not new just newer and wondered what might be best to get next, colour would be nice, Wifi of course, GPS maybe but there are so many different options it's a bit bewildering to be honest.

Any suggestions.

I still have my " second generation" kindle....not even a touch screen. Don't use it though. I use my tablet as, like you, I was confused about the different kindles and never got round to buying a replacement. Haven't worked out the advantages of having a separate device to lose track of. So would be interested to be enlightened.

Yes it seems GPS is missing from all of them.

I'd prefer to stick with Kindle "Kindle" but this might be worth a punt, has colour and GPS and seems cheap enough apart from it has ads ??? you can get it without ads for slightly more.

That seems to be aimed at portable entertainment, I use other devices for that. I prefer to keep my book reading separate so I would go for a Kindle “Kindle” too.

Yes I was thinking the same, but some books have colour photos and illustrations hence the colour want, and of course WiFi is a must, the GPS was a just in case want in case the phone packs up, I'd have Google maps installed.

I have a 10 inch tablet with Kindle on it but it just doesn't feel right, and three laptops but reading books on them id horrible.

Not sure which Kindle mine is but 6th gen seem to ring a bell, it's in the van so must have a butchers later.

Not sure that I'd go with that option. It's basically an Android tablet tied to various Amazon things, including the ads. It's not a Kindle at all. In fact, you'll notice that the Kindle branding was dropped from Fire tablets some time ago. Yes, it does have the advantage of being cheap, but it is so for a reason. As it says: "Note: Google Play Store is not supported on Fire tablets. Some apps may not be available. Subscription fees may apply."

Be aware the newer kindle eat batteries much faster than the earlier ones .We updated one of first generation as we didn’t expect it to last much longer but four years later the original is still going and the replacement is needing charging daily.

May as well stick with the one I have then :( :(

We both have kindle fires great for us , only want them for book reading , both loaded with huge amounts of books of our choice and easily charged with plug in and USB in our vans, got solirtare card games on them as well, our kindles are old obtained from car boot sales, they have WiFi and can be used for magazines etc and also audio books BUT we just read books on them

Not been to a car boot in ten years maybe.

I have one of those but an earlier version which you could side load Google play store on to it, as said they are just an Android tablet and there are better tablets available, you can have mine if you want to try it but it will be a week or so before I am home

I'm not in any rush.

How much are you wanting for it?

Oh Okay, I'm happy to do that.

PM on it's way.

As mentioned, the Fire HD tablets are decent enough. well priced but limited in what you can do. If what they are able to do in terms of available apps meets what you want to do they are a good deal, but that limited flexibility can be a real pain :(
Think I got one of the original "Kindle Fire HD" tablets back in 2012 - £99 for the 7" one. If I recall, I think I got it after I got a Samsung that never worked properly and had to go back. (but bought another ""Fire" 7" tablet in 2017 for under £30!)
Switched to iPad for a few years but overpriced and overhyped. Sold it on when I no longer needed the specific iOS App I got it and the iPhone for.
Bought the 10" Fire HD tablet in Dec 2016 (from John Lewis rather than Amazon - same price, better warranty) but sent it back as it was too limited as a general purpose tablet. Got a Lenovo Yoga instead and been mainly using the Yoga Tab3 and then the Tab 3 Pro (nice tablet with built in projector) since early 2019
The 7" Fire one from 2017 I generally keep in the Motorhome as a handy device to be able to pick up and use and it still works fine within its limits (can use it to look at the Victron electrics kit ;) )

I have a 10'' Samsung Tab A which does all I need a tablet for 32gb but I mainly used it for Netflix, but that job is relegated to the Chromebook as I like the biggerer screen.

I was wondering about that too, the kindles have a matt screen.
