Vin Chip Upgrade - Cheshire Police

Cheshire Constabulary is using a new tool to aid the force’s fight against caravan and motorhome thieves.

The VIN CHIP anti-theft identification system enables officers to scan a touring caravan or motorhome from up to 15 metres away to see if it has been reported as stolen and find out who the registered owner is.

They can be scanned at speeds of up to 60mph.

Cheshire’s Roads and Crime Unit officers are now using the system, and owners of touring caravans and motorhomes across the county are being advised to ensure that they have a VIN CHIP fitted and are registered with the Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS).

Inspector Anton Sullivan, of the Roads and Crime Unit, said: “Due to supply and demand, the number of caravan and motorhome theft incidents tend to rise in the summer months.

“This year the demand for them is even greater than normal, with travel restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic making staycations, mobile homes and caravan holidays more popular than ever.

“So we could not have asked for a better time to add the VIN CHIP scanning system to our armoury for when we are out on patrol and monitoring our roads.

“Used by many other police forces in the UK, ports officers and also in mainland Europe and Scandinavia, it has substantially increased the number of stolen caravans and motorhomes that have been recovered and returned to their rightful owner.”

Since 2008 a radio frequency chip containing a unique vehicle identification number (VIN) number has been embedded into all UK-approved touring caravans when they have been made.

Owners of older caravans can have one fitted at a relatively small cost, and owners of caravans made between 2008 and 2016 can pay to have their chip upgraded so that it works as well as the newer ones. This may have an insurance benefit with some companies.

Motorhome owners can also pay to have a VIN CHIP fitted, and some manufacturers are now embedding them into all their new motorhomes.

Insp Sullivan added: “Working like a speed gun, a VIN CHIP scanner enables an officer to quickly see if a caravan or motorhome on the move has been reported as stolen, and who the registered owner is.

“Once a caravan or motorhome has been identified as stolen we will endeavour to bring the thief, or thieves, to justice, and have it returned to its owner.

“Our officers are now using the system to this end across Cheshire.

“However, the system will not work for touring caravan or motorhome theft victims unless they have a VIN CHIP fitted.

“Touring caravan and motorhome owners are advised to have a VIN Chip fitted and to have the vehicle registered with CRiS to help their mobile home be located in the event of it being stolen.

David Keane, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, said: “I am delighted to hear that Cheshire Constabulary has a new tool to help officers catch caravan and motorhome thieves and recover stolen vehicles.

“Opportunist thieves could not only potentially ruin someone’s staycation but could also put touring caravan and motorhome owners at risk of losing thousands of pounds if their vehicle is stolen.

“I urge all caravan and motorhome owners across the county to follow the advice from Cheshire Constabulary and check the security of their vehicles.”

Anyone with any information or footage regarding the theft of caravans or motorhomes is asked to call Constabulary on 101, give the details via https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

It costs £34.99 from here .......

Any idea that helps reduce theft has got to be a bonus.

Whilst my 2018 van is registered with CRIS, I've absolutely no idea whether it has a VinChip fitted. I guess not.

Main issue for me seems to be that it really needs more forces other than just Cheshire Constabulary to become effective.

This...from the opening post.....

Though I'd replied to this but it's only any good if the Police bother to use it a house near us was broken into the front door was smashed open and the house trashed while owner was away he reported it the police never came for 3 days then it was a cpo and he just gave the owner a crime number and left. So they'll not have much interest in looking for a stolen van

That's true, but as the initial info came from Cheshire Police, you would hope that as they advertised this capability, they will actually use it ............

I have no doubt the Police would very much like to solve more crimes but lack the resources to pursue time consuming enquiries with little hope of success. However given an automated system that allows them to quickly check if a vehicle has been stolen might well get used.

Holy Thread Revival Time :D

Was looking at this VinChip system at the NEC Motorhome show today and it looks quite a good system
There is a base version with the VIN registered on a database, some RFID tags and window sticker etchings, and a Deluxe(?) one with extra microdots (same type of thing as 'smart water' I think?).
Been thinking of having some kind of DB registration for theft protection and considering this, and there is a bit of a show discount (works out to be 20% or so I believe?).
Anyone looked at Vinchip (www.vinchip.co.uk) and has the system? or looked and decided against - and why?

link for the motorhome specific info - https://www.vinchip.co.uk/sectors/leisure-vehicles/motorhomes/

Bad idea going to motorhome shows you will think you need stuff and see some wonderful stuff but you’ll get home skint and say what the hell did I buy that for. You need a will of steel walking round them.
What? you mean I shouldn't have bought that self-cleaning dog bowl even though I don't have a dog? :D

The good (from one perspective) is that I am pretty sure I won't be signing on the dotted line for a new motorhome no matter how wonderful it is as couldn't afford it :)

(I did see a Chasson with the Layout that I would have done if I did a self-build and didn't know anyone made them .... Full width rear bathroom with a big external locker behind the bathroom. I could be tempted by that setup).

Is the big locker to keep the blow up doll in, asking for a friend. ;)

Well, FWIW, I went ahead and bought the 'deluxe' pack from the show. Been thinking of this kind of thing anyway and there was a small show discount.

Have you got a link please for cost, when I looked at the link on #9 there was no price you have to call them.

I checked the website as well (to check the "special show deal" was actually a deal ;) ) and while they list the prices for the Caravans, the Motorhome version, which is very similar but does have a few variances is not listed. I spoke to someone at the company and she, after checking, said that the Motorhome one should be just about the same price as the caravan, so that will give you an idea there.
To have the kit be active, you do also have to be "CRIS Registered" with your VIN in the database however, and that is a separate cost of £20. I think that is done separately because newer caravans are done automatically by dealers (?) but Motorhomes and older caravans would not be (my understanding, and my Motorhome is not on their database when they checked)

End of the day I selected the bundle that was the two packages combined, plus the CRIS Registration and paid £74.99 including the £10 show discount. Made sense to me to go for the bundle as the extra features did not add much to the total cost, but you don't have to of course.

I’ll go with you next time, Wully, if you follow my lead you’ll come back with the same money you went with 😉 🤣👍
