Im a tad confused……..
I have a standard B car licence with 3500kg limit.
If a MH is stated as 3500kg and a MTPLM as 3850kg am I able to drive it?

No, or yes, depends on when you passed your driving test.

If before 1997, then you should be ok, if after that, to drive over 3.5t then you need to take a test I'm afraid

I think the important weight is the one on the V5
If it is in fact 3850 you can always down plate it if you don't have the C1 class on your licence.

"but might be a good idea to visit a weighbridge to ascertain actual weight in use"

Davy
That's a good idea, after all it may not have enough payload if it's down plated (y)

For driving licence the weight that matters is the registered weight on the V5C, (Revenue weight). The vehicle plate should match the V5C but there are often several plates which can be confusing.

With a MTPLM of 3850kg, you require a C1 licence.

You need C1 to drive it if the MTPLM is over 3500. Doesn't matter what the actual weight is.

If the van is one made by a recognised company i.e. Dethleffs, Hymer etc. there will be a vin plate that shows vehicle classification as registered by them, this plate will supersede the original one (from base vehicle maker i.e. Fiat Mercedes etc) , there will be STUFFE 1, STUFFE 2 possibly STUFFE 3 followed by a Kg rating, whichever is the last stuffe number will be the weight classification, so a van could have left the manufacturers with a rating of 3650Kg but the stuffe No. shows 3500 Kg. That vehicle will be legally driven on a B licence.
if being used as 3500Kg then the maximum weight the vehicle is legally allowed to be is 3500Kg regardless of licence held by the driver.
