What do you use in your loo?

Has anyone else tried white vinegar? We used it for two months in Portugal over the winter on the recommendation of a Dutch neighbour. It worked well apart from once when maybe the dosage was wrong and the odour was strange and unpleasant. Dosage seems to be one-and-half caps plus water. It is ecologically sound and cheap (as chips - Ho Ho). We changed the toilet every two or three days. We have not tried it in hot weather yet (except for one overnight so not a real test). We also carry the blue fluid and bio liquid.

It is also widely used as a cleaning material in rural France where everyone had a septic tank and can't use bleach.

I used various types of 'eco-friendly' blue (and green) for the first few years but then switched to bio gel or capsules - anything available or on offer, although I've never tried powder or tablets. I don't think the efficiency or smell is necessarily any better but they seem to break everything down OK and the soap helps keep the inside of the cassette nice and clean. Best of all, I don't get blue stains over everything these days

I usually use Tesco biological washing powder tablets. I don't like shopping in Lidl or Aldi but I have used their stuff and found Tesco works better and smells nicer. Surf do rather nice smelling capsules which I've tried as well, it just depends what I have in the house when I top the box in the van up.

I did try the non-bio as an experiment but it didn't break down solids as well. I hate the smell of the blue stuff and the way it stains everything if it gets spilt or the bottle leaks. In my small van I don't have the room to store a bottle upright anywhere, so a plastic box with the tablets or capsules is better.

The bonus is I don't have to carry a separate supply of washing tablets if I'm away for a while and need to do some washing.
Why don’t you like Lidl or Aldi?

Cheap bio tabs + Diluted Zoflora, cos it smells nice(ish)

New toilet do you think I can fit a SOG to it.

I use the lidl formyl bio tablets and have found them to be fine. It may be old wives tales but I follow these anyway;
Firstly there is a period after blue has been used where bio tablets may be less effective due to residual blue killing the enzymes, so it’s worth persevering a little when first using them.
Secondly when emptying the cassette do not rinse too thoroughly as the chlorine in water may again kill the enzymes.

Thanks, Bill. Your first point I'd picked up from another member when I first started using Bio flavour washing products in the toilet (in fact from Karen, Cheerful Charlie's much better half). Your second point is new to me. As you say, it may be folklore but it doesn't harm to follow these guidelines.

Getting a tadge confused here.

What is SOG?

Since starting this hobby(?) I have used the Blue liquid. On a recent trip to the Isle of Skye I noticed the sign said 'GREEN ONLY'. I didn't even know there was a GREEN variant.

So what is the best to use in the loo? Is it down to presonal preference (nearly said 'taste', doh!) or are there benefits of one system over another?

I should add I have never had a problem with the cartridge loo until I got to Skye.

Basically, it's an extractor fan, that removes odours, from the toilet cassette

Some people are dead against them, claiming that they are obnoxious, to van's parked nearby, but, in my experience, this is only an issue, if the filter isn't changed, often enough. Plus, it only extracts, when the toilet is in operation, so, unless you use your toilet continuously, then it couldn't be much of problem

Hi,

We use the Blue Dometic Tabs, easy to handle, store and use, we tried the green version once but in our experience they are not as effective as the blue ones.

We have not tried any of the washing powder tablets mentioned in this thread, but might give it a go as they are probable cheaper than Domentic tabs (£12.00 for 16).

Regards,

Paul

Don’t think colour has much to do with it...it’s only a dye. One-Chem Bio is blue, works in top tank and cassette and only contains as far as I know enzymes for breaking down poo. I had used Tesco Bio liquid, but this contains a lot of additional surfactants and other nasties necessary for washing purposes. If you look up Tesco liquid on the detergents website you will see it contains at least three substances toxic to aquatic life.

Yes it should be non bio for septic tanks usually, manufacturers sites should give this information if you check.

The green colour for bottom tank (cassette) is supposed to show it is organic and safe for use in septic tanks to anywhere else.

Elsan green - maybe a bio capsule as well for good luck though.
