You only need a heater to prevent water pipes freezing up, so why not just dran the water system, unless you are going to be using the van regularly? It will take a prolonged deep frost to freeze water in the pipes or (more critically) in the boiler! Not just frosty grass in the morning. Heating the residential area is not sufficient to prevent freezing in critical pipes/boiler in outside areas, in a severe frost. So, drain the water especially if you go away without the van during winter months.
If you do use electrical heating to keep the van warm, use it on a timer on the houzse side of your mains hook-up. Bad news for the leisure battery if it's on power 24/7. I have the hook-up on a timer that runs around an hour a day in winter (off in summer as I have solar panels) to compensate for current drain by alarm system; timing adjusted based on battery voltage on control panel display.
