Whether to apply additional silicon to side window

I have just fitted a new side window and wondered whether it was a good idea to apply glazing silicon sealing the outside edge to prevent dirt accumulating in the gap between the glass and the van bodywork. Anyone done this? Or is there a reason not to do it?

Normally you would apply sealant to the frame where it abuts the body, I always put a little extra in and let it squeeze out then remove the excess.

Thanks.
I used the whole tube of sealant but with a large window with a wide margin no sealant came close to the outside edge.

Hard to comment without seeing the job but maybe you could have used more than one tube I did on my selfbuild windows, bead was 10mm thick and was double width.
