Way back in April, just before heading off in the van to the Netherlands, the EML on my Sprinter based Hymer came on. As there seemed to be no issues with the performance of the van we just carried on. Since then we have had several trips in the UK as well and covered some 2000 miles. Occasionally I have popped into my local garage to get the EML cleared (NOX sensor) free of charge, only for the light to come back on again after a few miles! Although the motorhome has been running perfectly I thought I better get a permanent fix as the dreaded MoT is due soon.
I took it to our nearest (Aberdeen) Mercedes van and truck dealer today. Job done, soot particulate sensor replaced but my goodness what a price. The part itself was around the £200 mark but their labour is charged at £130/hour so I am very light in the wallet now after 2 hours labour, all plus VAT!
As I was walking around their yard trying to find my van concealed between all the oil service company artic units, all the Scottish and Southern Energy 4WD sprinters and the Asda and Sainsbury’s vans I thought if they’re all paying these high labour rates (possibly a small discount with their accounts) it’s no wonder that we’re paying so much for everything these days.
if only I could have done the job myself with a sensor off eBay!!
