Thank you. There seems to be a debate about doing it south to north or north to south. I see you suggest the former....was there any particular reason ? Also can you tell me any "must see" stuff .?

When you come up from Harris make sure you head over to the West Coast of Lewis before you cross to Ullapool. EXPLORE and enjoy...
K ;)

Hello,
When you get off the ferry you will find that it is one island, Lewis on the right and Harris on the left. Harris has the
most and best beaches. Lewis is where most people live and where you will find the town of
Stornoway if you need to stock up or get fuel. Horgabost beach has a campsite, which is actually
two industrial containers with ladies and gents showers. We didn’t stay but used it as a service stop.
I think it was £2. Here is the link to the chemical disposal, showers and toilets
disposal-points
We also visited Luskentyre beach, the most photographed beach in the country – there are a lot of
wild spots that look like wild camping along the beach but you need to pay about £5 to the Harris
trust - you can do this via paypal on your phone if you have a signal or later on if you don’t .
Test your metal and drive out to Husinish – you can wild camp out there. There has been a toilet
block added since we were last there.
Seilebost beach on the way to northon is nice although we couldn’t find the way onto to it.
Whatever you do on Harris make it a must to visit Northton and Croft 36 http://www.croft36.com
You can wild camp beside the beach if you want as well. Fresh made by the lady who lives in the
house at the back. Just leave your money in the honesty box. You will not be disappointed in the
food.
You could also try the Golden road https://www.virtualheb.co.uk/golden-road-isle-of-harris-western-isles/

How many days are you going for, and some brilliant replys as to where to go

Hi sorry been offline. We are hoping to go 8 days on April. Not sure whether to start north and head south. Some people favour that

Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this reply. I have been offline a few days so catching up

Think that you will wish that you have more than 8 days to visit. We had 2 weeks and wished that we had longer to explore. We went to Inverness, across Ullapool, then across to Stornaway, through the islands and back into Oban from Barra. Enjoy !!

We're planning same trip in June so great to read this thread and are working on about 12-14 days plus time to get up and down from Cumbria.

It may be in the wrong direction, but if you need somewhere to stay near Ullapool, I can definitely recommend Port a Bhaigh campsite, which is about 45 mins to the NW. I was there just after Christmas, following recommendations online, and it didn't disappoint.

The road to Husinish is about 13 miles of very narrow single track road. It can test your nerves a bit, but it's a brilliant route and well worth the effort. I believe that wild camping there isn't encouraged because you can stay overnight on the car park or a nearby dedicated motorhome area. If you have a small van then the car park is fine, if you're van is 6 metres or more go to the motorhome site a couple of hundred metres before the visitors centre. It's all donations for your stay and the toilet and showers are excellent. You need to pay £3 for chemical disposal.

We loved it there and ended up popping back before we returned home.

A bit of advice. The highland cattle are very friendly and will stand in the middle of the road and watch you. Do NOT be tempted to drive round them, most of the single track roads have deep drainage ditches either side. Your better of getting out of the van and asking them politely to move :)

To be honest you can't go far wrong anywhere on the islands. Have a great trip

Any suggestions of good spots to stay on route up to ullapool and back from oban greatly appreciated. Would prob do 3/4 up and 2/3 down from Cumbria. Thanks

I don't want to be picky but Calanais Standing Stones or Callanish Stones if you prefer the English are not in Harris, they are in the heart of the Isle of Lewis.

Best route is always south to north. Why?, you more often than not will have the prevailing winds behind you, and yes it does make a difference even in a motorhome. Also if you take longer to do the the trip because of as all the fantastic sites and scenery you will undoubtedly encounter, then when you get to Ullapool you will have a faster route South.

As far as Must See's ... its just about all of it but include a run to the very south of Vatersay for the best beach in the world... perhaps.

Have been doing some research on Scottish beaches ont'Tube..There are some gorgeous ones the majority of them are in the Outer Hebrides...
