At last after a short wait for medical recuperation we are off.
9th March: Ferry to Calais and swift trip through France to a night in Antran near Chatelleraux. Great quiet square in front of the church with river walks in better weather, 9 deg.
10th March: Onwards to Bilbao to a nice overnight on a car park. 5 mins walk to a bus and only €1.35 each way on 15 min ride into town.
A gentle wander round Bilbao in the 23 deg sun and a visit to the Guggenheim Museum. Our appreciation of art was a little lacking.
11th March: Short drive along the North coast to Islares and stayed on the seafront car park watching surfers. We met a well traveller Australian couple who had flown into Alicante via London Singapore Brisbane to pick up their motorhome. They had been travelling north for a few weeks to the UK for their annual UK registered MOT.
12th March: A couple of hours drive East to Antromero to see the Crystal Beach tomorrow. Diamonds, Rubies and Emeralds expected but shiny glass probably to be found.
Raining and 12 deg at the moment 12 deg and cloud forecast for tomorrow, perfect for beach prospecting.
No rush South yet, too much to see.
Hoping to make the river festival at Alcoutim by the 26/27th.

Glad you have finally got on the road , drive safely and hope our paths cross on your adventures 🌞🍷

As the Motown song goes “ we’re working our way back to you babe” eventually. If you overheat El Chorro is good place to cool off.

David, I can't believe you've taken the plunge into retirement! Well done you... isn't it just the best feeling? :giggle:
Hope you and Mandie have some amazing adventures xx

Enjoy..and take care ! (Extra Care !)
Covid-19 could well "explode" in Spain France and Germany in the next week or so and they could end up by moving towards the Italian situation (but maybe not as bad).
Check internet 2x a day and "have a plan"...depressing I know but realistic !

The plan is catch it and recover in isolation whilst touring in the motorhome. Also sing happy birthday twice whilst washing hands.

Personally speaking, I am amazed that anyone would or could ever contemplate undertaking such a journey most especially as France and Spain have amongst the highest rates of Covid-19 virus increases in the World!

Would recommend coming to Portugal as very few cases reported here, especially on the Algarve coast where it has been in the twenties C this week. We are told the virus cannot survive once the temperature reaches 26C so hopefully that will happen soon.

Yes I would love to do Portugal, but the problem is that you have to drive through France and Spain to get there (I can't do the Santandar crossings for various reasons), so for me at least that rules Portugal out.

Oh.my.good.grief!!!! I've just realised that I didn't even read your username... just glanced at the avatar and thought, that's Geraldine. Their avatar doesn't even look like that any more! I feel more than just a bit stooopid now
I'm so sorry Steve and Shirl but still wish you both amazing adventures and the happiest of retirements :giggle:

Thanks Woody, Heading that way towards the end of the month. Any rabies, herpes, typhoid, tetanus, malaria or yellow fever to look out for? We’ve been advised about them all during our world travelling over the years. Hope to catch up with but no handshakes just a shoulder nudge. 😉 Steve n Shirl

sorry to say the smugglers festival at alcoutim & the river one at pomarao have both gone victims of the virus

Arrived at an LPG station near A Caruna in northern Spain and the attendant held his hands up and muttered quarantine. Would not fill the LPG so it became self service. We also needed diesel and he suddenly became the attendant to dispense that. Strange. We decided things may be starting to turn silly in Spain so headed South. Called at Santiago for Lidl supplies. Lots of empty shelves and freezers. No water, eggs, vegetables or bread for us. Motorway signs on the way south displaying “Avoid travel stay at home”. We have settled on the north coast in Portugal at Carreco and will chill a little.

Shops have no bread so we’ve found a windmill and will try to make our own. Does anyone know where the starting handle is? Has anyone got any spare wheat?

Just restocked the supplies at Intermarche hypermarket at Viana do Castelo. What a superb free aire. Motorhome fuel, water, black and grey water dump, overnight parking, outdoor washing machines all combined with food/diy superstore fully stocked. The French even look after Motorhomes in Portugal.
N 41° 40' 49" long. W 8° 45' 58" for anyone passing.
