Importing food into the EU

After reading about truckers having their sandwiches confiscated when arriving in the Netherlands, I got to wondering what we'd be allowed to carry in our motorhomes: we know folk who take loads of British food with them for long stays! I got in touch with Europe Direct, who sent this:

From 1 January 2021 rules for personal passenger imports of food containing animal products applicable to non-EU countries will apply to movements from Great Britain into to the EU.

The rules are not related to customs duties/tariffs but to the prevention of introduction of animal diseases from non-EU countries. Also, they do not apply to food consumed by the passengers during their travel.
Exempted are the products below, provided that they are shelf-stable at ambient temperature or have clearly undergone in their manufacture a complete cooking or heat treatment process throughout their substance, so that any raw product is denatured:
— bread, cakes, biscuits, waffles and wafers, rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products containing less than 20 % of processed dairy and egg products;
— chocolate and confectionery (including sweets) containing less than 50 % of processed dairy and egg products;
— food supplements packaged for the final consumer containing small amounts (in total less than 20 %) of processed animal products ;
— olives stuffed with fish;
— pasta and noodles not mixed or filled with meat product containing less than 50 % of processed dairy and egg products;
— soup stocks and flavourings packaged for the final consumer containing less than 50 % of fish oils, fish powders or fish extracts.

More information on those requirements and relevant legislation can be found here:
https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/animalproducts/personal_imports_en

Mind you, they put a bit at the end, saying the information they provide isn't legally binding! They still didn't answer my question about whether EU products like unopened Edam and Brie cheeses, prepacked salami from Germany or Italy (or Lidl!) and tinned mackerel or sardines would be allowed.

It's a little annoying that you can't even have some milk in the fridge in your MH for a cuppa for when you get to France.

Going into France nigh on empty will not worry me one bit, as my first port of call is always the nearest LeClerc.

I will be concerned if there are limitations to the dry and tinned dog food I need for miss Molly as she has a special food

Then, the next worry would be if I was able to go to Norway, as I would want to be well ‘canned’ up with food to take there, although I guess if transiting EU countries is still an issue I could enter EU empty and fill up before entering Norway. Confusing for now, I’m sure it will be explained in detail later on 🤔

This is so clearly something that should have been resolved in the years since the referendum vote. Someone has been sat on their hands doing nothing since 2016. I'm sure we haven't suddenly become a breeding ground for dairy infection between December and January.

It will be interesting to see how well/hard it is policed. It would have to be a boring day for the French customs to stop you and confiscate the milk from your MH I reckon.

Obviously they can't do a full search of every vehicle, but it did say they would use sniffer dogs, so they may only need to open the door and let the dog have a sniff. One bark and the dog food's under the bed, 2 barks and the bacon's in the fridge.

If you get caught with illegal foodstuffs not only will it be confiscated but you'll get a fine to boot.

It’s been like this to enter the USA for many years, and with very good reason.

Canad & NZ as well

Interesting that the various bugs seem to realise we are not in EU.
It was obviously OK before ****** and only our status has changed..fundamentally nonsense
Just another headache !!! To go with the rest. (Ie exporters)
Statement of (political/busines fact!) thus not my political opinion.

The reason for the new restrictions is that whilst previously UK was bound by EU rules on food imports this is no longer the case as the food could be from anywhere in the world.

Don't believe it! We've been pulled off the autoroute south of Boulogne by the Douane when we've just been tootling along under the speed limit. We had to follow a guy on a motorcycle to a fenced pound, which had a long queue of vehicles of all types, but none French. It was crawling with customs officers, male and female (or other gender of your choice), all tooled up. We were lined up, and a mobile X-Ray outfit scanned the entire van. A few minutes later we were turfed out of the van when they came with a print-out of the X-ray to investigate some stuff in the fridge, and some more in a locker which they couldn't identify from the scan. Scary, especially since there was a weighbridge there and we were on our way home . . .

Have you any idea what happens when you come back into UK from Europe?
What are the rules, about bring back
Drink?
Foods?
Assorted products such as gifts, clothes, jewellery or new watch or camera?
And anything special that might catch you out?

What people need to remember is French Police, Gendarmes and Customs are well funded and there are plenty of them. It’s very rare you see less than 3 Gendarmes travelling around in a patrol car.
We live in rural Brittany and regularly see roadside police and custom checkpoints, and it’s not just one or two bored looking officials, as Frogman above states, there’s dozens of them with a work ethic seldom seen north of the channel.

You should read this to understand your allowances.

We are an island so should be easier to protect ourselves. Let’s do the same as Oz and NZ do and clamp down. If you want food and drink buy it where you are going. No more Yorkshire tea bags 😭😭😭 what about my coffee mate 😭😭😭
I am sure we will all survive 😂

What No porridge for Brekkers ! or Black pudding or.......MNX
Just say to Mr/Mrs/Miss/Miss/?? Douane
V F no M N X

Ooooh I forgot porridge. That is stable at ambient and do they count rolling as processing or not. Noooooooooo

Fresh cream is a swine to find in Germany, so no making German campers salivate with envy whilst we cook camper curry. Once were allowed out my smuggling career starts.

I hope the UK customs are also taking the same rediculous level of enforcement for anyone from the EU coming in for this to be sorted out for both UK and EU travellers to be able to enjoy their holidays (plenty of Germans prefer to bring their Schinken with them instead of the British stuff).
The French supermarkets won't be too happy either with Brits not stocking up on any cheeses to bring back.
