We are having to replace the Thetford N175 fridge freezer, in our 2009 Swift kontiki
Any suggestions, either, stay with Thetford or maybe change to Dometic, or anything else?
Thanks in advance

If it were me, I would be putting in a compressor fridge. Possibly Thetford as they do an exact-size swap.

i replaced my n175 with a new fridge couple of years ago cheapest option was £1700 fitted i ended up paying £2000 for a dometic 6480x all singing all dancing etc the door opens both ways it has a full length led light etc the fitment was a doddle and it has been superb

Bonkers, too much money, lend me some please, comp fridge £50 inverter £20 of ebay.

the problem with any named item is if you want to maintain its value you have to replace like for like if i want/have to sell my van in the future it has to be maintained to a level , although there is no problem using the domestic appliance if my van has a £40/45k value to dealers it would be almost unsaleable with a house fridge in it ,

RugbyKen, yes you are right,
And as we full-time at the moment compressor fridge running off batteries probably won't work for us, that said, weate up for any ideas, thanks all

That is a valid point of view on a coachbuilt Motorhome.
I would still replace a 3-way with a compressor fridge though. Both Thetford and Dometic sell Compressor alternatives to their 3-Ways which look spot on and would for most be considered an upgrade.

You might be surprised. They are in the order of SEVEN times more efficient.

Thank you Wildebus I am going to do some research, if anyone knows anything would appreciate it.
At the moment we have a good solar system, but are being let down by our leisure batteries, 2 X 110ah by morning only showing 11.9v so these need to be replaced! Oh yes and it comes in threes! Steps broken!! 😂😂😂😂

Replaced the fridge freezer in my Chausson recently £1200 fitted Dometic be aware that the fridge will NOT fit through your Habitation door I had to remove the passenger seat in my van and the table to get the old fridge out and the new one in through the front passenger door?

mine as i said previously opens both ways it sits in the middle of the van opposite the sink as someone says in the promo video one way for lettuce tother way for beer, but of course you are also able to remove the door completely which did help when getting it into position

As soon as I get round to trawling through which dometic compressor fridge is a direct swap for the crappy old tech inefficient temperamental 3 way unit in the motorhome I'll be skipping the 3 way in the blink of an eye....

The pfaff of a 3 way compared to the simplicity of the Waeco compressor cool box we had in the campervan is painful...

Compressor cool box was running 24/7/365 for all the time we had the transit... Always loaded with beer/butter etc and ready to go.

For fun, intially watch this from the start point I set, but afterwards the whole video is interesting and worth watching the full thing

Would I be right in thinking with a compressor fridge, the outside temperature, IE: direct sunlight on fridge side of van, will not affect the fridge temperature?

demand will increase (for example, Waeco quote something like 1.29A at 25C and 2.0A at 40C IIRC), but on the flip side, the typical Compressor user also has solar, so the increase in direct sunlight also means improved harvesting - and usually improved beyond the inceased Fridge demand.

Compressor fridge will have to work harder in warm conditions....
However compressor fridges are nowhere near as temperamental as absorbtion types....
They are also easier to increase ventilation too IF you intend using them in warm climates as there are no flue/drop out vent issues etc...

Absorbtion fridges were fine back in the old days BUT if you have solar and batteries already...
Compressor types really are much better.

My compressor fridge is on 24/7 and i just estimate 48 amps per 24 hours. No problems most of the year but keeping up with power in winter (5 months of the year) can be a challenge unless you move regularly. I am hoping the folding panel I have purchased will reduce genny use even further in the coming winter 👍
